Overview
Senior Project Manager (SPM) role at Smiths (Gloucester) Ltd. Smiths Detection, part of Smiths Group, is a global leader in threat detection and screening technologies for aviation, ports & borders, defense, and urban security. The SPM drives project delivery excellence across an assigned portfolio, leading integrated project teams in a matrix organisation and delivering major complex projects that span Commercial and / or Technology.
Responsibilities
- Initiate, plan, monitor & control, communicate and close-out all assigned projects; apply best practice and PEC processes where applicable.
- Lead integrated project and cross-functional teams to achieve on-time delivery within budget and within PEC process requirements.
- Coordinate project management, finance and project controls activities; maintain project records in defined software tools / databases.
- Ensure artefacts (WBS, CBS, RACI, schedule, resource planning, risk and change controls, etc.) are prepared as per project categorisation.
- Establish and maintain cost and schedule baselines; apply PEC risk and change control processes; manage scope and forecast updates.
- Conduct monthly variance analyses with Project Controls; present findings at reviews and drive corrective / preventative actions.
- Mentor junior project management staff; provide ad-hoc support.
- Act as Deputy for the Portfolio Head of Projects when required; supervise team activities and represent at reviews or meetings.
- Foster collaboration across the PM function and wider Smiths Detection business; integrate Commercial and / or Technology projects to maximise end-to-end delivery.
Typical Duties
Commercial projects : lead or input to customer tenders, negotiate deliverables / budgets / schedules, complete Kick-off and Sales-to-Project handover, manage external stakeholders, finance management, and handover to service.Technology projects : initiate feasibility studies, plan / execute product development or sustaining projects, work with Product Management to deliver outcomes, support field service issues or product complaints, manage external stakeholders (suppliers).Portfolio duties : act as Group Lead for designated projects, develop and lead PMs, forecast sales and Gross Margin, maximise resource utilisation, escalate as needed, drive best practices.People, Commercial and Compliance
Promote disciplined project management globally; develop knowledge across functions; coordinate work to develop team capability.Ensure best industry practice in project management; provide confidence to customers through reporting.Ensure compliance with Ethics, Health, Safety and Environment; support standardisation of Programme Lifecycle Management across the PEC framework; maintain the PEC process framework.Qualifications
Educational : Internationally recognised professional qualification in project management (IPMA level B / C or equivalent) or relevant practical experience as a Programme Manager on complex programmes; degree (HND minimum) in Business / Project Management or Technology / Engineering desirable.Knowledge : Extensive knowledge of project management methodologies (Waterfall, PRINCE2, Agile), planning techniques, and project controls such as earned value management; awareness of complex integrated sensor systems and cross-functional priorities.Skills : Demonstrated leadership and people management; strong verbal / written communication; problem-solving; baseline planning and scheduling; experience with SAP, Primavera, Oracle ERP, MS Project, P6 / Active Risk Manager, Cobra, Power BI; ability to drive continuous improvement; product development experience in a commercial environment.Competence : Ability to lead, influence across a matrix team, manage multiform stakeholders, and deliver under ambiguity; produce cost / resource-loaded plans and senior leadership reporting.Planning & Decision Making : Plan, organise and execute projects; act autonomously within strategic direction; make timely decisions and escalate as needed.Impact and Relationships
Senior professional project leadership role with accountability for major projects spanning Commercial and Technology; failure to achieve outputs impacts divisional objectives.Key internal and external relationships include regional and global programme leaders, Market Heads, Technology and Commercial executives, Project Controls, Finance teams, and customer / supplier representatives.Additional Information
