Job description

We are delivering a large-scale, multi-year AI-enabled digital services programme aimed at transforming citizen-facing experiences across the UK. The programme focuses on building secure, scalable, and AI-powered services, with an emphasis on trust, resilience, and common government digital standards. Candidates will join a cross-functional team shaping next-generation public services through cutting-edge engineering and AI.

Overview

The Software Engineer will design and implement high-scale, high-volume services in the Business Layer, enabling secure and efficient AI-powered GOV.UK services.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain services using Node.js (TypeScript), AWS Lambda, API Gateway, Serverless Framework, and Redis.
  • Build secure, performant APIs and interfaces between the Business Layer and other government systems.
  • Contribute to high-volume, high-availability workloads powering millions of GOV.UK citizen interactions.
  • Collaborate within agile teams alongside product owners, architects, and engineers.

Essential Skills

  • Strong Node.js / TypeScript production experience.
  • Hands-on AWS cloud expertise (Lambda, API Gateway, Serverless, Redis).
  • Background in high-volume workloads and API integrations.
  • Active UK Security Clearance.

  • Experience with security-sensitive systems.
  • Exposure to AI / ML integration or data transformation pipelines.
