Be part of a service that puts patients first!

We are seeking 2 clinically confident and experienced optometrist to join our central telemedicine team. This is a pivotal role within our organisation, delivering high-quality remote care and supporting urgent eye health services across the NHS. As a clinical contributor, you will play an essential part in shaping patient outcomes through expert decision-making, compassionate care, and collaborative service improvement in a fast-paced, digitally enabled environment.

About Us :

Primary Eyecare Services is the largest not-for-profit leading provider of NHS primary and community eye care services in England. Established over a decade ago in the North West, we now operate nationally, delivering enhanced eye care through a network of over 3,000 optometry practices. We work with NHS commissioners and Trusts to provide accessible, high-quality eye care services in local communities, supported by teams with expertise in NHS contracting, patient support, referral triaging, and telemedicine.

Role Overview :

Primary Eyecare Services is seeking highly skilled, experienced, and clinically focused optometrists to join its central telemedicine clinical team. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic and fast-paced healthcare environment, where high-pressure situations require strong clinical expertise, sound decision-making, and the ability to provide exceptional patient care.

As a key member of the clinical team, the telemedicine optometrist will be responsible for delivering high-quality care, ensuring accurate assessment and management of a wide range of ocular conditions. The role requires a commitment to maintaining clinical excellence, adhering to best practices, and working collaboratively to enhance patient outcomes.

This position is ideal for an optometrist who thrives in a challenging yet rewarding environment and is passionate about delivering the highest standards of care to patients. The ability to remain composed under pressure, make informed clinical judgments, and provide a compassionate patient experience is essential.

Shift Pattern :

This is a part-time position, working 7.5 hours per day, with days required being Sundays and 1 day during the week with ad hoc Saturdays as needed. The hours for these shifts are set from 9am to 5 : 30pm. We also have option of only 1 day per week, working Sundays only.

The FTE salary for this role is £55,380 per annum and will be calculated pro rata accordingly, with Sunday shifts included in your contract and paid at 1.5x your usual rate.

Location :

This is a remote role, offering the flexibility to work from home anywhere within the UK. Unfortunately, applications from outside the UK cannot be considered.

General Responsibilities :

  • Telemedicine Consultations : Conduct prompt and accurate patient assessments via remote consultation, managing a diverse range of conditions presenting via the Community Urgent Eyecare Service (CUES). This requires swift clinical decision-making and the ability to trust your professional judgment in a fast-paced environment.
  • Clinic Management : Efficiently oversee your assigned clinic, employing superior time management skills to maintain high standards of patient care under pressure. Efficiency and adaptability are essential to navigate the dynamic nature of the role.
  • Effective Communication : Articulate clinical decisions and management advice clearly and confidently to patients, fellow clinicians, and team members, ensuring high professional standards are upheld.
  • Clinical Support : Provide timely and knowledgeable clinical support to the service administrative team as situations arise, demonstrating reliability in high-pressure scenarios.
  • Service Improvement : Collaborate proactively with operations and clinical leads to identify and implement enhancements in service delivery, contributing to the continuous improvement of patient care processes.

Thrive in a high-pressure, high-impact clinical role.

What We’re Looking For :

  • Must be a fully registered Optometrist with the General Optical Council (GOC)
  • Completion of WOPEC MECS Level 1 & 2, or Independent Prescribing (IP) qualification
  • Must hold valid Professional Indemnity Insurance, via the Association of Optometrists (AOP)
  • Minimum of three years’ post-qualification experience as an Optometrist
  • Ongoing commitment to CPD in line with GOC requirements
  • Broad exposure across the optometric sector, gained through diverse roles or working environments
  • Demonstrable experience in managing patients through remote consultations
  • In-depth clinical understanding of ocular pathology and evidence-based management of ocular conditions
  • High level of confidence and independence in clinical decision-making and patient care
  • Proactive in driving service efficiency and upholding professional standards
  • Resilient and composed under pressure, with a consistent focus on delivering high-quality outcomes
  • Strong team orientation, with the ability to collaborate effectively to achieve shared objectives
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and succinctly
  • Compassionate and patient-centred approach to care
  • Adaptable and forward-thinking, with the ability to support and implement new initiatives
  • Additional GOC-registered qualifications (e.g. Professional Certificate in Medical Retina or the Professional Certificate in Glaucoma)
  • Demonstrable experience delivering urgent eye care services (e.g. CUES or MECS)
  • Why Join Us :

  • Pension match up to 5%
  • Sick and critical illness pay cover
  • Electric car scheme
  • Enhanced family leave
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays (rising to 30 days with service)
  • Training and development opportunities
