Care Assistant

Reports to: Senior Care Assistant/ Care Coordinator/ Line Manager

Location: Northern Ireland

Salary: £12.82 per hour

Contracted Hours: 37.50 hours / week

We are now offering supported living in Belfast, Crumlin, Ballymena, Ballymoney, and the Causeway region, and are seeking dedicated and compassionate Care Assistants to provide care and support to individuals with complex needs, learning disabilities, and challenging behaviour.

About the Role

The Care Assistant will provide high-quality personal care and housing support services to individuals with complex needs, learning disabilities and/or challenging behaviour. The goal is to support them in leading fulfilling, integrated lives within their communities. All care and support must be provided in alignment with the organisation’s core values, customer service standards, and guidelines, ensuring a compassionate and person-centred approach at all times.

Care Assistant will work collaboratively with service users and the staff team and is expected to proactively challenge any harmful, abusive, discriminatory, or exploitative behaviour or practices that may place service users at risk, ensuring their safety and dignity at all times.

This role involves working with individuals who may have complex needs, including a potential forensic background. Due to the nature of their disabilities, some service users may exhibit behaviours that challenge, which may be directed towards themselves, other service users, or staff. As such, it is crucial to carefully consider your skills, experience, and personal qualities are suited to working in this environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide intimate personal care to service users, ensuring their independence is promoted, and maintaining appropriate levels of privacy and dignity at all times.
  • Assist service users in accessing and engaging in a wide range of activities, including recreational, educational, leisure, and spiritual pursuits, fostering social inclusion and integration within their local community.
  • Collaborate in the planning, development, and implementation of individual care and support plans with service users, incorporating any professional recommendations, and actively participate in reviews and meetings related to these plans.
  • Support service users in the management and day-to-day running of their home, helping them to develop essential life skills and empowering them to make decisions.
  • Maintain clear and open communication with service users, team members, managers, families/carers, and professionals, ensuring that all relevant information regarding the service user’s well-being, service quality, and safety is shared.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with Service Managers, staff teams, families/ carers, Multi-disciplinary team, RQIA, supporting people, local councils and community groups.
  • Ensure that all medication is ordered, stored, and administered following Triangle’s medication policy and the training provided.
  • Participate in the safe handling and management of the organisation’s and service users’ finances in accordance with the established procedures.
  • Involve service users in decisions about the services they receive, providing them with necessary information in a timely manner to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Accurately maintain and store all records within the service, ensuring the confidentiality of personal information in accordance with Triangle’s data protection policy.
  • Treat colleagues with respect and actively contribute to creating a positive and harmonious living environment for service users.
  • Actively engage in team meetings, handovers, and performance reviews to continuously improve service delivery.
  • Ensure participation in both internal and external personal development training, conferences, and other learning opportunities to support professional growth.
  • Uphold and contribute to the organisation’s vision, mission, and values, adhering to all policies and procedures, including the Code of Conduct, Attendance Policy, and the NISCC Code of Conduct.
  • Immediately report any incidents, accidents, or concerns to your Team Leader (or if unavailable, the Line/Area Manager).
  • Participate in organisation’s quality management systems, audits, and reviews to ensure high standards of care and service.
  • Carry out work in full compliance with Health and Safety policies, procedures, training, and guidance, including risk assessments.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by line managers or senior staff in alignment with the care plan and organisational goals.
  • Be available to work according to the shift pattern, which may include waking night duties, weekend shifts, and bank holidays on a rota basis.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

  • Holds a Level 2 or 3 NVQ/Diploma in Health and Social Care, or a relevant care-related qualification from the UK or overseas that demonstrates suitability for the role.
  • Experience working or volunteering in any healthcare setting (including all aspects of care (e.g. personal care, manual handling, daily support)
  • Willingness to complete the Company's intensive knowledge and skills training involving client placements under supervision, passing the theoretical and practical assessments, and being signed off on having the competencies required before commencing employment.
  • Ability to read and implement care/support plans.
  • Experience with medication administration and health monitoring.
  • Experience working with individuals with diverse care needs.
  • Experience providing care in home, residential, or hospital settings.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development (e.g., disability awareness, managing challenging behaviour, mental health support, medication handling).
  • Demonstrated interest in progressing within the care sector (e.g., senior carer, team leader, or trainer roles).
  • Knowledge of RQIA standards, sponsor licence compliance, or previous Skilled Worker sponsorship.
  • Holds a full UK driving licence, or a full foreign licence

  • Experience navigating sensitive conversations with clients and families.
  • Proactively supports cultural sensitivity and inclusion in care delivery.
