Job overview

Eligible for a Recruitment/Retention payment of £3,000 for new starters who are external to the Trust. This is payable in 2 instalments over a 24 month period. Terms and conditions apply to the scheme, in relation to repayment should you leave within a 24 month period.

Main duties of the job

Existing CAMHS experience is not essential as you will have the opportunity to learn new specialist skills through our excellent learning and development opportunities which will include leadership and managerial skills alongside clinical interventions. It is important to show through your application and interview, what transferable skills and experience you have.

In addition to this we welcome skilled practitioners who would like the opportunity to develop their CAMHS specific skills. These clinicians may come from a variety of professional backgrounds including adult mental health, learning disability and paediatric settings.

As well as our inhouse development programme, we also have our CAMHS Nursing Academy which is a training and development program which is based on the four pillars of advanced nursing practice.

We have vacancies across our adolescent units;
• Tyson East 2, Maudsley Hospital (currently based at Bethlem Royal Hospital)
• Bethlem Adolescent Unit, Bethlem Royal Hospital
• CAMHS Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Bethlem Royal Hospital

Bethlem Adolescent Unit and CAMHS PICU based at the Bethlem Royal Hospital and Tyson East 2 will be based in the new Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young people once opened (TBC), currently the ward is based on the Bethlem Royal site. PICU cares for some of the most unwell and vulnerable young people requiring secure mental health services in a compassionate, safe and timely manner.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Working with young people is both challenging and demanding but also incredibly fun and rewarding. Working in CAMHS is an opportunity to work with young people at the start of their mental health journey to help them build a positive outlook for their future.

As a clinical charge nurse you will take a role in planning clinical care, being part of the nursing team to employ your pre-existing clinical skills to help provide a therapeutic and safe environment. You will be an individual who would like to develop skills in an acute mental health setting and possess a calm and contained demeanour. You will develop confidence in assessing risk on a formal and informal basis and be able to balance this effectively with acting in the least restrictive way, fostering a safe yet therapeutic service. You will have a solid working knowledge of relevant legal frameworks i.e. MHA (1983), Capacity Act (2005) and the Children Act (1989).

You must be a qualified RMN, LD or Children’s Nurse with the desire to work in an in-patient mental health setting. It is essential to have an understanding of the challenges that face nurses caring for young people with mental health difficulties today and be able to demonstrate resilience and empathy. Most important to us is that you have a commitment and passion to want to listen and support young people in a variety of creative ways.

Essential criteria

  • Registered Adult Nurse and/or Registered Mental Health Nurse and/or Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse
  • Mentorship qualification

Desirable criteria

  • Master’s degree

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Knowledge of relevant Professional and Clinical legislation
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and audit
  • Experience as a preceptor /mentor

Desirable criteria

  • Experience of engaging /supporting clinical research projects
  • Experience of delivering training
  • Experience of recruitment and selection of staff

Skills and Attributes

Essential criteria

  • Able to provide quality care that is responsive to service user’s needs, without close supervision
  • Teaching ability
  • Advocates for all individuals, particularly those with protected characteristics; promotes equality and diversity
  • Resilient: able to cope with difficult interpersonal situations

Desirable criteria

  • Problem solving, ability to identify problems, review options and take appropriate action without a predetermined framework

  • Empathy for service users including individuals who have experienced mental health problems
  • Able to work a flexible 24hr working pattern inluding night shifts and weekends
