Job summary

East Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (GMSA)

The East GMSA is led by an Executive Board representative of the four NHS Trust Principal Partners that have direct responsibility for delivering the service :

o Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CUH)

o Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH)

o Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH)

o University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL)

The overarching purpose of the job is to provide senior leadership of the coordination of genomic research and innovation projects across a complex footprint, involving a range of NHS providers, academic and industry partners and other stakeholders.

The Genomics Innovation Director will have a recognised national / international profile in leading and coordinating research and innovation projects and in contributing to national and international initiatives in genomic science / medicine. They will bring together key opinion leaders locally and nationally to deliver successful outcomes for the GMS. The post holder will work with the Genomics Innovation Directors across each NHS GMS Alliance, as well as NHS England and key stakeholders, to align research and innovation activity and to develop a national plan of action. Coordinating and driving the NHS Genomic Networks of Excellence as well as supporting the development of the NHS GMS Research Collaborative, they will drive forward research and innovation across the East NHS GMS Alliance region.

Main duties of the job

The Innovation Director will be a key member of the core GMSA management team. They will work closely with the Clinical Director, Strategy Director, senior clinical team members, other regional GMSA Innovation Directors, and staff throughout the East Midlands and East of England geography to ensure the effective management of the genomic research programme.

Internal Relationships :

This post will be a core member of the East Genomics Executive Board representative of the four NHS Trust Alliance Partners and build strong links with the East GLH, Local Genomic Lab representatives, Cellular Pathology Genomic Centres and Clinical Genetics Services across the region.

External Relationships :

NHSE / I Genomics Unit, NIHR Biomedical Research Centres, NIHR Clinical Research Facilities, NIHR Clinical Research Networks (CRNs), NHS Trust Provider Research and Development departments, Higher Education Institutions, Health Innovation East (HIE) and East Midlands (HIEM) and the Life Sciences Industry, Cancer Alliances.

About us

The East GMSA is an Alliance Partnership between Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Norfolk and Norwich University NHS Foundation Trust, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. While recruitment for this role is being coordinated by CUH, the successful candidate will be employed by and located at the nearest NHS Trust Alliance Partner within the East GMSA.

  • Educated to PhD level or equivalent level or above and experience of working in a leadership position in a specialist area.

Experience / Knowledge

Essential

  • A recognised national / international profile in leading and coordinating research and innovation projects and in contributing to national and international initiatives in genomic science / medicine.
  • Proven leadership of managing teams, leadership experience and delivering transformational change at scale and beyond organisational boundaries.
  • An understanding and experience of the UK research funding landscape including experience of working with partners such as the National Institute of Healthcare Research (NIHR), industry and academia.
  • Knowledge and experience of the NHS innovation landscape and partners such as the Health Innovation networks and what evidence is needed to influence adoption and spread across the NHS and particularly in the NHS Genomic Medicine Service
  • Experience of working effectively with senior leaders, including bringing together key opinion leaders locally and nationally to deliver successful outcomes.
  • Experience of fostering collaborations, with strong negotiation skills, skilled in developing strong and productive working relationships with key partners.
  • Extensive experience of delivering presentations to large groups of stakeholders in often pressured and politically sensitive environments.
  • An understanding of issues surrounding research, including patient confidentiality, good clinical practice and research governance.
  • Knowledge of quality control, assurance and audit practice for research purposes.
  • An understanding of the role of the NHS Genomic Medicine Service, in particular the role of the NHS Genomic Medicine Service Alliances as a key part of this infrastructure.
  • Ability to deal with challenging situations in a formal setting.
  • Experience of managing or overseeing innovation projects in healthcare, research, academia, or an industry with a focus on innovation.
  • Experience of implementing innovative approaches successfully.

  • In-depth knowledge of the current innovation landscape in healthcare, within the NHS and in broader contexts.
  • Knowledge and understanding of information governance to mitigate IG barriers within the region.
  • Experience of working with and influencing national / professional bodies or other external partners.
  • Ability to use an established network of industry, academia and healthcare stakeholders to operate in the innovation ecosystem.
