Job summary

Cancer is one of six national Programmes of Care overseeing the commissioning of specialised and highly specialised services. The role of the Programme of Care is to develop and deliver a comprehensive work programme that achieves demonstrable improvements in the quality, equity, value and outcomes of commissioned specialised services. To do this the PoC team works in partnership with both internal and external stakeholders, including cancer charities, specialised commissioning colleagues in the national and regional teams and the national cancer programme.

The principal purpose of the SpR sessions will be to support transition of the radiotherapy improvement priorities to local systems. This includes the implementation of the nationally developed quality improvement toolkits and pathway analyses and to support peer learning approaches using national analyses of clinical and plan quality data. This approach will support peer learning across RT Networks and it is expected that the role will become more system facing to enable RT Network clinicians and providers to interrogate the data and take action.

The role will work as part of the Cancer Programme of Care, Radiotherapy Team to support Radiotherapy Networks to embed the radiotherapy improvement tools (Quality Improvement Toolkits) and technologies (AI and ProKnow) into routine clinical practice in order to generate evidence of improvement / benefit.

Main duties of the job

The Cancer Programme of Care is seeking two Radiotherapy trainees each able to offer at least two clinical session per week, with some flexibility inthis arrangement, to lead on national quality improvement initiatives inradiotherapy. The SpR(s) will be experiencedClinical Oncology Trainees working in the field of radiotherapy.We are particularly keen to hear fromexperienced Clinical Oncology Trainees with sessional availability additionalto their current role.

The role(s) willfocus on threeprojects, noting that all three have a common link requiring combined effort. See attached Job Description document for more information.

The post is also sponsored by the Royal College ofRadiologists with opportunity to engage in the work of the Professional Supportand Standards Board and its supporting committees, including qualityimprovement initiatives and engagement with junior fellows.

The SpR(s) will be mentored by the National ClinicalDirector (NCD) for Cancer, with support from the Radiotherapy NationalSpecialty Advisor, and work with key partner organisations, to build anunderstanding of the national context of clinical leadership. TheRadiotherapy SpR(s) will be closely supported in all aspects of this role bythe Cancer Programme of Care Team.
