Job description

Overview

We’re working with an innovative, British based start-up at the forefront of sustainable aircraft development. They\'re focused on the development of a fully electric light aircraft for general aviation purposes and are looking to appoint a Head of Systems Engineering.

This leadership role will see you drive the systems engineering strategy for next-generation aircraft, ensuring the successful design, integration, testing, and certification of critical aerospace systems. You’ll take ownership of systems architecture across propulsion, avionics, battery management, and flight controls, while guiding a talented team of engineers and specialists.

You’ll act as technical authority for systems integration, bringing expertise in MBSE, compliance (EASA / FAA / CAA), safety assessments (FMEA / FTA), and certification processes. With responsibility for program delivery across all development phases, you’ll collaborate closely with airframe engineering, program management, and external partners to ensure safe, efficient, and scalable solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Define and lead the systems engineering strategy, aligning with company goals.
  • Oversee architecture and integration across propulsion, avionics, flight controls, and battery management.
  • Drive the adoption of MBSE and digital twin technologies.
  • Manage certification activities, including requirements documentation, safety assessments, and regulatory liaison.
  • Lead verification and validation activities, including HIL simulations and flight test analysis.
  • Collaborate with airframe engineering on integration, installation, and maintainability.
  • Represent the business externally at industry events and with partners.

Qualifications

  • Proven leadership experience in aerospace systems engineering.
  • Strong background in systems integration, MBSE, and digital engineering.
  • In-depth knowledge of certification processes and compliance standards (EASA / FAA / CAA).
  • Hands-on experience with safety assessments (FMEA / FTA) and configuration management.
  • Track record of programme delivery from concept through to certification.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and work cross-functionally with airframe, propulsion, and avionics specialists.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to balance technical rigour and commercial priorities.
  • If you’re a systems engineering leader with a track record of delivering complex aerospace programmes and want to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of electric aviation, we’d like to hear from you.
