Brief Description

You’ll help keep our nation moving every single day. A critical part of the work is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As an operative you’ll work outdoors in a small team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.

Our operative community comes from a variety of backgrounds. We focus on transferable skills and behaviours and provide necessary training to work safely and competently on the network.

Role Purpose and Responsibilities

• Track : Maintain, inspect, and repair the track network (Permanent Way or P-Way) to keep the railway safe and efficient.
• Work outdoors in all conditions, day or night, often transporting kit across varied terrain.
• Operate with safety and respect for rules; work next to moving trains traveling at high speed.
• You matter to your team : be the first to arrive and last to leave, check and prepare van and equipment, and drive the team between sites. Provide lookout duties to keep the whole team safe.
• You matter to us : committed to self-development; receive training to develop technical and non-technical skills. Structured training supports moving into rail careers.
• Your Skills Matter : demonstrate transferable skills if you have no rail experience; meet required standards and keep up to date with procedures.
