Overview

Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for the Specialist Community Public Health Nurse - School Nurse role in the Westmorland & Furness 0-19 Team. The closing date is 19 February 2026.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, deliver and evaluate an efficient and cost‑effective Specialist Community Public Health Nursing Service for an identified school‑aged population within a defined geographical locality and school cluster.
  • Provide line management and leadership within the 5‑19 skill mixed team and pro‑actively deliver the National and Public Health agendas in response to identified health and social need, work in partnership with other agencies and meet agreed standards, objectives and statutory requirements.
  • Lead and Deliver the Healthy Child Programme with a drive towards reducing the gap in health and social health inequalities.
  • Be professionally accountable, adhere to and apply the NMC standards.
  • Make Every Contact Count to enable opportunistic delivery of concise healthy lifestyle information.
  • Work with parents and children to promote physical, emotional and social development of pre‑school and school‑aged children; apply the Solihull approach in all work with children, young people and families.
  • Ensure inter‑agency/professional partnership working between services, statutory and voluntary organisations to facilitate integrated approaches meeting the needs of children.
  • Work in an integrated way with local communities to build community capacity, utilising strength‑based approaches.
  • Hold a caseload of families with school‑aged children and young people, providing specialist evidence‑based advice, information and support to the population served, team members and relevant agencies.

Job responsibilities

  • Be responsible for leading and delivering the Healthy Child Programme across the 6 early and school‑aged years high impact areas, using a tiered model approach (universal, universal plus, universal partnership plus) and building community capacity.
  • Hold professional accountability and apply the NMC standard.
  • Engage in inter‑agency collaboration to facilitate integrated approaches to meet the needs of children.
  • Lead and work with parents and families to promote development and reduce health inequalities.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse.
  • Specialist Community Public Health Nurse Qualification (School Nursing).
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge relevant to working with children and families underpinned by theory.
  • Postgraduate diploma level or equivalent.

Experience

  • Experience of partnership working.
  • Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Knowledge and experience of promoting safeguarding and wellbeing of children.
  • Influencing and negotiating skills.
  • Experience in leading teams in the provision of health services to children, young people and families.

Salary: £38,682 to £46,580 per annum
