Job description

Job summary

This permanent B6 respiratory (static) post forms part of the paediatric respiratory team, which provides care for critically ill children.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work within the wider Paediatric Team at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital trust. The post will be working with inpatients to provide assessment, treatment & advice in the paediatric respiratory service including PICU, PCCU, PHDU, respiratory wards, cardiology and general paediatrics.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Clinical

  • To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of the post-holders own work.
  • To carry out assessment and treatment of acutely ill paediatric patients with respiratory problems, patients with chronic respiratory conditions and long term ventilation requirements, to determine clinical diagnosis and implement appropriate interventions where indicated with support from senior specialist physiotherapists as required. This patient cohort has multi-pathology including those who have highly complex and / or chronic presentations. To liaise effectively with the multidisciplinary team, specialist medical staff to promote optimal care and to maintain associated records, as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To undertake the specialist assessment as an autonomous practitioner, carry out diagnostic procedures and interpret the results for paediatric patients with multifaceted respiratory and / or rehabilitation problems on PICU, PCCU, HDU, ELCH in-patient wards with support from senior specialist physiotherapists as required. To support non-respiratory staff caring for patients with respiratory problems, as appropriate including those patients with a complex presentation, using investigative and analytical skills.

Service Development

  • To propose and implement policy changes that impact on all service users, and advise team leader of any service development changes made, to ensure quality standards and effectiveness of patient care.
  • To ensure that junior staff / students and assistants implement policy and service developmental changes.
  • Human resources

  • To be responsible for supervision and co-ordination of junior staff / students and assistants on a daily basis
  • To be responsible for supervision, teaching and appraisal of junior staff, students, assistants and other health professionals
  • Communication

  • To be able to motivate and persuade others through effective communication skills, with the benefit of verbal and non-verbal skills, using written and electronic information where needed
  • Person Specification

    Qualifications / Education

    Essential

  • Degree in Physiotherapy
  • HCPC registration in physiotherapy
  • Desirable

  • Post graduate course (s) in relevant subject
  • Previous experience

    Essential

  • Completed core rotations in acute respiratory, orthopaedics, neurology and outpatients.
  • Experience of working as part of multi-disciplinary team.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development maintained in a portfolio.
  • Experience of supervising students.
  • Desirable

  • Previous adult / paediatric respiratory physiotherapy experience as a junior or senior member of staff.
  • Previous experience working as a senior physiotherapist.
  • Experience of involvement in audit and research.
  • Experience of supervising staff assistant.
  • Skills / Knowledge / Ability

    Essential

  • Knowledge of recent practice issues and research.
  • Able to present information, written and orally, in a clear and logical manner and be able to adapt this to be appropriate for children of all ages and adults.
  • Proven time management and prioritisation skills. Self-motivated.
  • Good listening skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Desirable

  • Experience of assessment and management of the acutely unwell child.
  • Presentation skills formal teaching to small groups.
  • Evidence of delegation skills.
