Due to the secure nature of the programme, you will need to either hold, or be willing and eligible to undergo, UK Security Clearance. This is a hybrid position.

Your future duties and responsibilities :

In this role, you will design, build, and enhance Spring-based microservices that drive event-based decisioning across the Home Office ecosystem. You will develop and optimise rule-based logic using Drools, ensuring HOMBRE continues to deliver accurate, enriched, and prioritised event outputs. Your work will directly contribute to the performance, reliability, and value of a national-scale platform.

You will collaborate closely with engineers, architects, and product teams, taking ownership of your services, contributing creative solutions, and benefiting from a supportive team culture. At more senior levels, you will guide colleagues, share expertise, and influence engineering practices across the project.

Key responsibilities include :

• Develop & Deliver : Build Java / Spring Boot microservices and RESTful APIs
• Design & Optimise : Implement and refine rule-based logic using Drools syntax
• Test & Assure Quality : Create robust unit and integration tests using JUnit and Mockito
• Collaborate & Improve : Contribute to Agile delivery pipelines and CI / CD workflows
• Support & Mentor : Provide guidance to junior developers where applicable
• Enhance & Innovate : Shape engineering approaches and improve system performance

Required qualifications to be successful in this role :

You should bring strong Java engineering experience, sound understanding of API-driven services, and confidence working in modern Agile environments. Experience with rule engines, cloud technologies, or front-end frameworks is beneficial but not essential.

Essential experience :

Solid experience in Java development

Strong knowledge of RESTful APIs and Spring Boot

Proficiency with Postgres

Experience using Maven

Strong unit and integration testing skills (JUnit, Mockito)

Understanding of Agile delivery and CI / CD
