What it's like to work hereWorking as a Ranger across Marsden Moor and Hardcastle Crags means looking after of two of the North’s most distinctive and much loved landscapes. Each site offers its own atmosphere, challenges, and rewards - and together they create a uniquely varied and fulfilling place to work.Marsden Moor is wild, dramatic and elemental; thousands of acres of upland habitat where weather, wildlife and wide open skies shape your day. You’ll be part of the team protecting precious blanket bog, responding to the ever present challenge of wildfire risk, and helping visitors experience the moorland safely and responsibly. It’s a landscape that keeps you on your toes and gives you the rare feeling of being immersed in true open countryside.Just over the hill, Hardcastle Crags feels like a different world: steep-sided woodland valleys, tumbling watercourses, and the historic Gibson Mill at its heart. It’s a site full of people and activity — from families exploring the many footpaths to volunteers helping care for woodland, wildlife and heritage. Your work here will be hands-on and varied, with plenty of opportunities to engage with visitors and support a dedicated and passionate ranger and volunteer community.Across both sites, you’ll join a supportive team that values collaboration, practical problem solving, and a shared commitment to conservation. You'll help cover on-call and weekend working on a rota basis at both sites. The mix of varied ranger duties, project work and visitor engagement across two very different sites means your skills will grow quickly. You’ll pass on your knowledge and enthusiasm to encourage others to love these places as much as you do. Whenever and wherever you come across people, you’ll take the time to talk to them and answer their questions, rather than rushing away to the next task.You’ll make sure that the conservation work and outdoor experiences on the land in your care are of the highest standard.
