Job description

Overview

As one of the 12 'early implementer' sites for integrated community mental health services, we are expanding our community mental health offer. Our new services are centred around the Primary Care Networks and aim to engage comprehensively with Integrated Care Systems using a whole person, whole population health approach. The model utilises community resources including health, social care, VCSE organisations and local communities to support wellbeing beyond traditional mental health services. These new teams enable access to mental health services wherever and whenever needed, helping individuals manage their mental health in their local community. We are seeking skilled and enthusiastic individuals.

There is an exciting opportunity for an innovative role of Mental Health Practitioner within each borough. You will be employed by West London NHS Trust, and will help develop pathways of care in the local community mental health team (MINT). The role offers mentoring opportunities, career progression and ongoing education.

Main duties

As a Mental Health Practitioner, you will contribute to the development of local pathways of care in the community mental health team (MINT) and support access to services in the community. This role may include mentoring responsibilities and opportunities for professional development.

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking applications from Registered Mental Health Nurses who have experience of working in community services. The ideal candidate will have :

  • Prior experience of working across a range of community mental health settings and with a range of mental health diagnoses / needs
  • Knowledge of and experience in delivering a range of brief interventions to patients with mental health needs
  • Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to strengthen local relationships with the local MINT Teams
  • Ability to introduce the team, the atmosphere, the work ethic and the benefits

Job Description and Person Specification

Essential – Qualifications and Training

  • Professional qualification in mental health – Mental Health Nursing (RMN) with current NMC registration
  • Desirable – Qualifications

  • Degree or Diploma level with related courses (e.g., CBT, Brief Solution Focused Therapy)
  • RGN / physical health qualification
  • Evidence of recent and ongoing relevant professional development
  • Essential – Experience

  • Post-qualifying experience in psychiatry
  • Experience supervising junior staff within own and / or other disciplines
  • Desirable – Experience

  • Experience in Band 6 role or equivalent
  • Experience in primary care, social care or voluntary sector settings
  • Audit and research experience
  • Teaching / training in formal or informal settings
  • Other relevant post-registration experience
  • Knowledge

  • Knowledge of counselling or cognitive behavioural skills and psychosocial interventions
  • Knowledge of recovery approaches used with mental health conditions
  • Ability to interpret research and apply to practice
  • Autonomy to make clinical decisions with complex presentations, under appropriate supervision
  • Ability to engage distressed or challenging patients using de-escalation techniques
  • Personal Qualities

  • Ability to work under pressure and maintain concentration in unpredictable situations
  • Ability to meet deadlines, exercise initiative, flexibility and tact
  • Awareness of personal competency limits and seeking senior guidance when needed
