Data Privacy Counsel — Perm – Uxbridge (Hybrid) - £75-80K plus bonus / Bens
A well-known international retail group is looking for an experienced Data Privacy Counsel to join their Legal team. This is an office-based role in Uxbridge (hybrid working — minimum three days in the office per week), reporting into Senior Counsel — International and working closely with the global legal team. Applicants must be UK-based and have the right to work in the UK.
What you’ll be doing
1. Act as the day-to-day privacy lawyer for the business, supporting the Director Senior Counsel — International to build awareness of the company’s data privacy governance programme.
2. Provide pragmatic in-house legal advice on data privacy and data-sharing matters across multiple jurisdictions (EU, UK, Canada, Mexico, APAC and US).
3. Draft, negotiate and review commercial agreements with privacy and data transfer clauses (e-commerce, software licences, consultancy agreements etc.).
4. Prepare and review data protection agreements : data processing agreements, data transfer agreements and privacy impact assessments.
5. Maintain and update data privacy policies, guidelines and training materials; support privacy awareness initiatives.
6. Work with business process and asset owners to ensure personal data processing activities are recorded in the central privacy compliance tool.
7. Coordinate and manage data subject access requests and data breach incidents.
8. Monitor legal and regulatory developments and brief senior stakeholders and governance committees as required.
Who we’re looking for
1. A qualified lawyer with solid, hands-on experience in data privacy law — ideally gained in-house.
2. Proven experience reviewing and advising on commercial contracts.
3. Experience of working in a large international company is highly desirable; retail sector experience is a plus.
4. Strong stakeholder and interpersonal skills — comfortable engaging with senior business partners across jurisdictions.
5. Excellent organisational, project management and analytical skills; able to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines.
6. Proficient with Microsoft Office tools.
7. Law degree (or equivalent) and UK right to work required
