Trainee Clinical Scientist - Clinical Pharmaceutical Science
NHS Wales - Trainee Clinical Scientists Clinical Pharmaceutical Science. Exciting opportunities to use your science degree for patient and public benefit. Gain a master's degree and specialist work-based experience through a nationally recognised training programme. Starting salary will be on the first point of Band 6 on a 3-year fixed-term contract.

The NHS in Wales is offering 2 salaried post-graduate training programmes in Clinical Pharmaceutical Science for high-calibre science graduates who are passionate about science and its role in patient care.
The Trainee Clinical Scientist will be employed by the host organisation for a fixed term of three years. During this time, they will work through a work-based programme of learning. This will be combined with an academic programme at master's (MSc) level over the three-year period.
The first part of the academic programme will introduce the basic science and theoretical background of the rotational disciplines and their application in clinical science within health, as well as providing an introduction to healthcare services and values. The master's degree includes a research project within year 2 / 3.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Pharmaceutical Science programme offers trainees the opportunity to develop as a specialist in the manufacture or preparation of a wide variety of pharmaceutical products e.g. Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatments, Parenteral Nutrition and Radio Pharmaceuticals. In addition to this training in the associated disciplines which support these NHS services such as Quality Assurance and Control. Your science degree should be applicable to this practice area e.g. in a pure or applied science subject.
It can be advantageous to have gained some experience of working in a relevant environment before applying for a place, so as to understand the type of work you would be undertaking. An understanding of the responsibilities the role requires is beneficial, as well as the ability to progress excellent leadership skills to work in this fast paced and demanding environment.
You should be able to demonstrate your personal values, these must fit well with the NHS Organisation you apply for a placement with, and meet the requirements of the NHS Constitution.
About us
This is a three-year post-graduate programme, and the successful candidates will be employed by an NHS Wales organisation for the duration of their training and will be based in one of :
- 1x Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, St Mary's Pharmaceutical Unit
- 1x Swansea Bay University Health Board, Singleton Hospital
