Job description

We'll inspire and empower you to deliver your best work so you can evolve, grow and succeed - today and into tomorrow. We offer an exciting range of opportunities to develop your career within a supportive and diverse team who always strive to do the right thing for our people, clients and communities.

People are our greatest asset, and we offer a competitive package to retain and attract the best talent. In addition to the benefits you'd expect, UK employees also receive free single medical cover and digital GP service, family-friendly benefits such as enhanced parental leave pay and free membership of employee assistance and parental programmes, plus reimbursement towards relevant professional development and memberships. We also give back to our communities through our Collectively program which incorporates matched-funding, paid volunteering time and charitable donations.

Work-life balance and flexibility is a key focus area for us. We're happy to discuss hybrid, part-time and flexible working hours, patterns and locations to suit you and our business.

About the Opportunity

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated and well-rounded candidate as a Senior / Principal Geotechnical Engineer or Engineering Geologist in our established Waste Management & Decommissioning business, who will be responsible for leading internal ground engineering capability growth as well as assisting in sales and bid development. The candidate shall also provide technical input into a range of high-level national and international rad-waste safety case studies, site characterisation, geological and hydrogeological modelling development as well as lead on infrastructure and nuclear facilities ground engineering projects.

Our Waste Management & Decommissioning business has contracts in place and a growing order book that includes civil engineering frameworks requiring an experienced ground engineering professional with a background in earthworks and structures planning, design and management. We are looking to increase our team size to respond to current workload and anticipated further expansion of our business. We are interested in hearing from experienced Ground Engineering professionals with experience within the nuclear sector, and with experience of decommissioning, as well as the infrastructure sector.

For the right candidate there are opportunities to develop into a team leader role within our organisation. This would include taking on responsibility for team management, mentoring of junior team members and business development opportunities.

We are operating under flexible working arrangements, with a mixture of office-based and home working environments. Our main office is in Harwell, Oxfordshire but with a diverse range of clients and sites, where we focus our services, across the UK.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Support the wider radioactive waste management organisation by providing specialist geotechnical input and advice to on-going nuclear decommissioning, safety case development, engineered barriers and facilities & infrastructure engineering project work
  • Support the site characterisation geological team on local and regional scale mapping, engineering geological site characterisation and engineering works, development of geological prognoses and hydrogeological modelling
  • Assist in work winning activities and bid preparation
  • Price and produce GI specifications, schedules and BOQs in accordance with EN1997, BS5930 and ICE UK Specification for Ground Investigation
  • Technical supervision of GI works and lab scheduling in accordance with EN 1997-2, BS 5930 and ISO 22475; 22476; 14688; 22282; 17892 etc.
  • Interfacing with site contractors
  • Involvement in site works - willingness to work outdoors
  • Contribute to the development of ground models and data archives (utilising GiS, openground, holebase, leapfrog etc.)
  • Interrogate laboratory and field-testing data to derive ground parameters for geotechnical analysis
  • Produce geotechnical factual and interpretive reports

Here's what you'll need :

  • Strong buy-in to our and our nuclear clients' health, safety and environment culture
  • Aptitude to manage time and priorities while working on several varied projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including tailoring outputs to the requirements of different stakeholders
  • Experience of undertaking site / field works, where required
  • Ability to identify and manage uncertainty and practical constraints in site characterisation and land quality assessments
  • An interest to explore and expand the use of new and emerging technologies in land quality assessments
  • The ability and focus to identify your own developmental and career goals and to take steps to achieve them, with support from your line manager
  • Experience :

As a Consultant Geotechnical Engineer or Engineering Geologist we would expect experience within the following areas :

  • GI planning, supervision, logging, and test scheduling (both superficial and bedrock environments)
  • Land Quality component to some GI
  • Earthworks / GI supervision, remediation, inspection, testing and geo-hazard identification
  • Development of GIRs / GDRs and GFRs
  • Management of large data sets and parametric derivation
  • All aspects of geotechnical design (foundations, earthworks, retaining structures, reinforced earth etc.) in accordance with EN1997 and British standards CoPs
  • An interest in helping build 3D geological models
  • Earthworks classification and mass haul planning / management
  • An advanced user of numerical modelling tools for geotechnical and geoscience analysis is preferable and the ability for coupled Thermo-Hydro and Seismic modelling would be advantageous
  • Conduct or assist in BAT studies for nuclear sites for remediation and both near-surface or deep disposal (interim end-state or end-state)
  • Ability to think conceptually and develop feasible high-level ideas (below ground disposal systems, remediation measures, barrier systems) for high-profile nuclear clients
  • Our Culture :

Our values stand on a foundation of safety, integrity, inclusion and diversity. We put people at the heart of our business, and we genuinely believe that we all succeed by supporting one another through our culture of caring. We value positive mental health and a sense of belonging for all employees.
