Job description

Business Analyst 3435

Job description

58, 513 (the pay package includes basic salary and a DDaT skills-related payment)

Flexible Working :  We support a range of working patterns, full-time, part-time (minimum of 3 working days), compressed hours and job shares. Due to the nature of the role homeworking will not be possible.

About Us

MI5 and MI6 are part of the UK’s Intelligence Services. We work together to safeguard Britain’s people, interests and businesses from various threats at home, overseas and online, including cyber-attacks, espionage, terrorism, and organised crime. Working across our vital missions, you’ll deliver impact at the heart of national security, all within a supportive and inclusive environment that allows everyone to thrive.

The Role

Our business analyst roles are aligned and assessed against the Government Digital and Data Profession Capability framework (DDPCF), formerly known as Digital, Data and Technology (DDaT) Profession Capability Framework : https : / / ddat-capability-framework.service.gov.uk / role / business-analyst

You’ll work across MI5 or MI6 including Technical, Corporate and Operational delivery areas, applying structured business analysis approaches to support our key transformational challenges in areas such as Cloud, AI and Cyber to help our organisation continue to operate in a digital age.

You’ll analyse data and information relating to business goals, objectives, functions and processes. Working closely with stakeholders, you’ll define requirements to improve processes, systems and services. You’ll conduct options analysis, assess feasibility and operational impact, quantify potential business benefits and contribute to business case development. You’ll ensure solutions align with the vision, objectives, business and user needs and provide the expected benefits and outcomes. You’ll work across multiple teams to enable them to make informed, strategic and tactical decisions.

About You

You’ll have experience of delivering change and you’ll be able to highlight your achievements. You might currently be working towards one of the recognised BA certifications such as the British Computer Society (BCS) or International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) qualifications.

As an analytical thinker and problem solver you’ll have experience in applying structured methodologies to intricate business problems. You’ll be confident identifying the right techniques to investigate, analyse and propose solutions. You’ll be confident mapping business processes and working to identify improvements and efficiencies. You’ll also have experience using frameworks and tools to develop business models of small to medium complexity across multiple teams. You know how to select the correct tools and methods for the environment. You’ll propose solutions that will benefit both the business and users.

And you’ll always be looking improve, whether you’re finding new business opportunities or seeking ways to develop your own skills and knowledge. You’ll have a background in leading the analysis, design and implementation of business changes – and evaluating their effectiveness. From mapping and documenting new processes to demonstrating as-is and to-be states, you’ll strive to add value to everything you do.

Importantly, you’ll build and maintain productive relationships with internal and external stakeholders. You’ll be adept at collaborative working, taking time to understand, document and prioritise stakeholder requirements, and communicate solutions clearly to your various audiences – ensuring people are kept in the loop throughout.

Training and Development

We have a supportive and active business analyst community who are committed to developing your skills. We recognise this will look different for everyone so there will be lots of tailored training, coaching, and mentoring.

We will cover the cost of professional memberships to either the BCS (British Computer Society) or the IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis) and you will have opportunities to attend conferences and network with other government departments.

As you develop, grow, and maintain your technical skills, you’ll progress through the Government Digital and Data Profession Capability framework. You’ll need to regularly demonstrate and accredit your skills based on the framework.

Rewards and Benefits

You’ll receive a starting salary of £58,513 plus other benefits including :

  • 25 days Annual Leave automatically rising to 30 days after 5 years' service, and an additional 10.5 days public and privilege holidays
  • Opportunities to be recognised through our employee performance scheme
  • Interest-free season ticket loan (parking and travel)
  • Excellent pension scheme
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Facilities such as a gym and restaurant, and on-site coffee bars (at some locations)
  • Paid parental and adoption leave

Equal Opportunities

At MI5 and MI6 diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word : those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.

We’re Disability Confident

MI5 and MI6 are proud to have achieved Leader status within the DWP’s Disability Confident scheme. This is aimed at encouraging employers to think differently about disability and take action to improve how they recruit, retain, and develop disabled people. Being Disability Confident, we aim to offer a person-to-person interview to any candidate who self-identifies as disabled and meets the essential criteria for the role. This is our ‘Offer of Interview’ (OOI). To secure an interview for this vacancy, the essential criteria (in order of application process) are :

  • Demonstrate a developed knowledge of analysing business problems and recommending a range of technical and non-technical solutions – assessed at application sift
  • Business Analysis expertise or recognised Business Analysis qualification(s) e.g. BCS (British Computer Society), IIBA (International Institute of Business Analysis) – assessed at application sift
  • What to Expect

Our recruitment process is fair, transparent, and based on merit. Here is a brief overview of each stage, in order :

  • Application for sift – please make full use of the word allowance for each question
  • Virtual HR and Competency Interview
  • Face to Face Technical interview / DDaT Assessment
  • Please note, you must successfully pass each stage of the process to progress to the next. Your application may take around 6 - 9 months to process including vetting, so we advise you continue any current employment until you have received your final job offer.
