Job description

About the role :

We have an excellent opportunity for a Mechanical Technician to join our Maintenance team at Beddington Sewage Treatment Works (STW). As the successful candidate, your role will be to ensure that all equipment at our waste treatment works is running safely and efficiently using proactive and reactive maintenance methods. To assist in keeping such a site running.

This is an excellent opportunity to make a real difference to Thames Water's environmental impact, and you will be actively helping to reduce pollution from our sites.

What you’ll be doing as the Mechanical Technician

  • Investigate plant failures and perform repairs as quickly and efficiently as possible to avoid interruptions to the process. This may involve investigating and diagnosing complex faults and performing repairs during incidents.
  • You will be expected to provide technical advice, refer to up-to-date technical knowledge, and provide training or support for technical trainees if required.
  • Examples of equipment that you will be working on include motors, gearboxes, screw / chain conveyors & centrifuges, various pumps, and associated control gear, 3-phase motors, starters and controls, electronic control systems such as VSD, automatic valves, flow, level and pressure measurement, programmable logic controllers, variable speed drives and controls, chemical handling, and dosing equipment.
  • Completing statutory checks as required.
  • Always working safely and complying with all Health and Safety guidance and procedures.

Base Location : Beddington - CR0 4TH.

Working Pattern 38 Hours Monday- Friday 7 : 30 am – 3 : 36 pm plus standby & overtime opportunity increasing earning by potential £8,000 - £10,000.

All PPE and tools are provided.

What you should bring to the role

  • NVQ level 3 or equivalent in Mechanical engineering qualification.
  • A valid driving license is essential.
  • Previous experience in an electrical apprenticeship, with an 18th Edition qualification, would be ideal but not essential.
  • You must be physically fit, as you will work in confined spaces while completing the appropriate training.
  • Knowledge and awareness of health and safety issues are crucial.
  • Be a time-served apprentice with considerable experience in electrical systems, ideally working in a “true multi-skilled” capacity.
  • Participation in a 24 / 7 out-of-hours standby rota will be required after a suitable period of training and assessment for which you will receive additional payment.

  • To be a self-motivated individual who can immerse oneself into the team around them, you need to be very disciplined, have the desire to learn from those around you and have a can-do attitude. This role can be demanding at times, but very rewarding, too.
  • Take Ownership of responding quickly to faults, being curious to fully understand the problem, and identifying the best solution to resolve it the first time.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with the team.
  • Teamwork – We are one team, and our end goals are the same.
  • Proactive – take the lead on recommendations and improvements around the site and communicate effectively.
  • Must be prepared to be trained in safety procedures.
  • Knowledge and awareness of health and safety standards

  • Standby rota payments & Overtime opportunities can increase this earning potential by up to a further £8,000-£10,000 per annum upon completion of essential company training.
