Job description

Job summary

Wye Valley NHS Trust wishes to appoint a Consultant General Surgeon with Special Interest in Upper GI Surgery, to be based at the County Hospital, Hereford.

This is a full time post attracting 10PAs, consisting of DCC PAs and SPAs.

The Job plan is advertised as 10PAs but additional PAs and SPAs are negotiable as service needs dictate.

The successful candidate will be a General Surgeon with training and / or experience and benign Upper GI surgery interest. The Upper GI surgical department provides complex benign Upper GI services including biliary surgery and hiatal surgery. A successful hot cholecystectomy service has recently been established.

The successful candidate will be part of the General Surgical emergency on-call rota which will be 1 in 8 with the prospective cover.

The successful applicant should be proficient in the management of common Gastrointestinal and General Surgical emergencies. They will retain responsibility for the care of these patients but can refer to appropriate specialist colleagues.

Experience / Training in advanced laparoscopic surgical skills and Upper GI endoscopy are essential.

Training, experience and a commitment to undertake ERCP is desirable (but not essential).

Main duties of the job

Provide a Consultant Surgeon service for the management of Upper GI and General Surgical diseases, as required for outpatient, inpatient and day-cases at the WVT.

Be committed to the General Surgery on call rota.

Collaborate with Gastroenterologists and other clinical colleagues in the local Upper GI cancer MDT, the regional Upper GI Cancer & Hepatobiliary specialist services (at Gloucester and Birmingham respectively) to provide high quality care to local patients.

Participate in multidisciplinary audit meetings.

Be actively involved in postgraduate training / teaching especially for the SpRs in the department.

Participate in departmental audit and clinical governance activity.

Work with the management team to meet the organisation's waiting time targets for all patients.

Qualifications

Essential

  • GMC Registration with Licence To Practice
  • Entry on Specialist Register in General Surgery, Or within six months of obtaining Specialist Registration (at the date of interview), or possession of CESR
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent
  • FRCS or qualification of an equivalent level

Desirable

  • Higher research degree
  • Clinical Experience

    Essential

  • Broad training / experience in all aspects of General Surgery
  • Training and Experience in Upper GI surgery, including complex benign Upper GI surgery, particularly hiatal surgery and surgical management of bile duct stones
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
  • Ability to perform Upper GI diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy (JETS / JAG accreditation)
  • Desirable

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining (UK) CCST in General Surgery
  • Experience / Training in ERCP & transnasal endoscopy
  • Management and Administrative Experience

  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
