Job summary

1x fixed term contract for up to 6 months

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Band 5 Registered Nurse or AHP / Paramedic to join the team at Stroud Minor Injury & Illness Unit.

Our ideal candidate will have recent experience in an MIiU / ED or acute clinical environment and whilst this is desirable it is not essential if transferable skills can be demonstrated.

You will also have a passion and commitment to the care you deliver & hold the patient experience at the heart of your practice and share our organisational values. You will need to be motivated and enthusiastic in your role & looking for an opportunity to join our highly skilled team of Emergency Practitioners who deliver evidence-based clinical care in our Practitioner Led Unit.

Main duties of the job

Stroud Hospital has a dedicated minor injury & illness unit (MIiU) open 7 days a week 08 : 00 - 20 : 00 hrs for Paediatrics & Adults with Minor Injury & illness presentations which was re-furbished in 2022

The Band 5 role includes the triage of patients using Manchester Triage and maintaining the safety of patients that are waiting to be assessed whilst working alongside the Emergency Practitioners to deliver care.

Job responsibilities

We provide a Multi-professional preceptorship programme that is aligned to the National Preceptorship Framework for Nursing and have been awarded the Interim quality mark from NHS England. Our programme is provided to all Newly Qualified; Nurses, Nursing Associates, Internationally Educated Practitioners, Allied Health Professionals and Return to Practice Practitioners. In addition to the programme we also offer all preceptees the opportunity of enrolling and completing the level 7 (Masters) 15 credit validated module Preceptorship for Healthcare (AP7026).

Newly qualified Social Workers are offered the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment programme (ASYE) which is similar to a preceptorship programme.

Clinical responsibilities :

To provide a timely triage service to all patients that attend the unit as per local and national guidelines

To ensure intentional rounding is facilitated to maintain the safety of patients whilst waiting to be assessed and treated by the EP.

To assist Emergency Practitioners with their assessment, provision of treatment and discharge planning using local and national guidelines and pathways of care.

To support the practitioner in charge with day to day planning, the delivery of a high quality service and the continuous improvement of the Minor Injury and illness service

Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care for patients in MIiU alongside the Emergency Practitioner in order to deliver a high standard of individualised care.

Provide advice, including clinical advice, and support to the local community (including telephone advice) staff and other disciplines.

To be flexible and adaptable in order to facilitate the provision of quality care for patients.

Willingness to develop specific expertise in a particular speciality that contributes to the care of patients within the MIU ( wound care, suturing skills).

To have the ability / knowledge in the application, removal and adjustment of plaster casts and splints.

To administer medication and treatment within the POPAM guidelines and within the Code of Professional Practice.

Be effective in communicating with patients including those that have learning disabilities or communication problems

Rapidly form therapeutic relationships with patients and carers who are experiencing emotional distress and be able to explain what is happening in a way they will understand.

To maintain accurate and contemporaneous records

Maintain enhanced clinical skills and attend mandatory and regular training as required

Treat all service users and carers with dignity and respect

Participate in all aspects of the 6 Cs process

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • RGN with current NMC registration or paramedic with current registration
  • Relevant clinical experience (including that gained as a student nurse / Health Care Assistant
  • Computer literate
  • Willingness to undertake additional training as required, including the use of Patient Group Directives
  • Evidence of on-going development
  • LENGTH AND / OR NATURE OF EXPERIENCE

    Essential

  • Evidence of ability to plan care for a group of patients
  • Desirable

  • Experience in Manchester Triage
  • Experience of working in primary care and / or urgent care settings
  • PROFESSIONAL / MANAGERIAL / SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE

    Essential

  • Knowledge of local and national policies relevant to clinical area.
  • Knowledge of clinical quality standards, CQC and evidence of implementing and monitoring these in practice
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety within clinical practice and associated areas
  • Desirable

  • Manchester Triage training
  • Qualification in teaching and assessing / mentor supervision
