Posting Context Statement : The position supports the primary investigator in researching small grain agronomic and pathology issues. The position supervises the work of the Cereal Extension team at the Aberdeen R&E Center and works with additional Research Technicians in planning field work. The position is responsible for implementing experiments, performing statistical analyses, supervising, quality control of field and lab data, and operating machinery such as combines, planters, and tractors.

Position Overview : Performs research activities and analysis; implements and evaluates research procedures and data. Records observations and measurements then reports results. Responsible for analyzing and preparing results for publication. Works under general supervision with a certain degree of creativity and latitude. May supervise junior research personnel.

Duties may include :

• Providing technical support in planning and / or designing of scientific projects, studies, or applications
• Planning and conducting research and analysis of scientific data
• Interpreting test results and comparing with determined standards and limits
• Identifying and evaluating scientific samples and determining need for further testing
• Developing recommendations and / or providing solutions, standards, and protocol to a wide range of difficult problems
• Planning, designing, developing, monitoring and / or evaluating portions of a scientific project, study, or application
• Providing scientific evaluations / assessments
• Researching, implementing, standardizing, and evaluating new procedures
• Maintaining detailed records of results and prepares written reports acceptable to the Principal Investigator and funding agencies
• Two years of post-Bachelor’s research experience related to the domain of this position.

Required Education :

Bachelor’s Degree in Plant Pathology or Agronomy.

Required Other :

Professional pesticide applicator’s license with demonstration and research endorsement or ability to acquire within 6 months.

Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to successfully pass a driver’s record check.

Work occasional weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Travel overnight occasionally.

Additional Preferred :

Demonstrated record of research achievement, serving as PI or Co-PI on extramurally funded research.

Participation in the development and submission of sponsored project proposals.

Working knowledge of correct agriculture experimental design and statistical analyses, including SAS programming.

Knowledge of small grain production methodology.

Experience operating a wide variety of machinery such as tractors, planters, tillage equipment, etc.

Supervisory experience. Experience in mentoring graduate students and effective collaboration in team-based research programs.

Demonstrated ability to work independently and with an interdisciplinary team.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions :

Ability to lift, carry, and / or otherwise move objects weighing 50 lbs.
