Habitat Works Ltd is an environmental contracting and ecological consultancy situated in Denby Dale, West Yorkshire. Our work encompasses habitat creation, restoration and management and ecological consultancy services. Our team of highly skilled professionals provides a comprehensive range of services, including planning support, Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) and ecology-led design. Additionally, we offer protected species survey, assessment, licensing, and mitigation services including the delivery of habitat creation and management works.

Role Description

We are looking to employ a Consultant Ecologist / botanist who will be based in our Denby Dale office in West Yorkshire with hybrid working arrangement. This is full-time role which will be both field and office based, with some requirement for remote working. Your responsibilities will include managing small to medium sized projects, assisting and leading botanical surveys, protected species surveys, undertaking habitat surveys and you will also have responsibility for producing written reports. You will also have opportunity to get involved in our ecological contracting projects which include on-site habitat creation and management work with recent works including constructing artificial badger setts, restoring and managing an old Parish Green Lane, reedbed translocation works and wetland management works for the RSPB, silt management works for Yorkshire Water, pond restoration works and native tree planting projects. Our projects are located both locally and across the UK so may require some staying away from home and a driving licence is required.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Minimum 3 years ecological / environmental consultancy experience
  • Relevant UK degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related field
  • Protected species licence(s) (preferable)
  • Good botanical identification skills at FISC Level 4 (minimum level 3) or equivalent
  • Membership with a relevant professional institute such as Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM)
  • Experience in ecological report writing and project management
  • Willingness to work away from home where required
  • A good understanding of UK environmental legislation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, in addition to mentoring of junior staff
  • Higher degree in relevant subject
  • Experience of GIS software (preferably QGIS)
  • Experience of project management / mentoring junior staff.
