Job description

Job summary

As a dispenser, you will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team within a GP practice to help provide an efficient and professional service to our patients.

This will be a patient based role and you will be expected to ensure patient needs are met in a timely manner and to a high standard.

Main duties of the job

  • Dispense NHS prescriptions for our registered patients in a timely manner.
  • Handing out dispensed medications and dealing with face to face queries.
  • Answering the telephone and assisting with dispensing queries.
  • Assist with ordering stock.
  • Issuing repeat medications as per practice policy.
  • Following dispensary SOP's at all times.

About us

The Parks Medical Practice is based over four sites in Northampton and has a combined list size of 23,000 patients. There are site managers based at each practice to oversee the day to day running and work with the GP partners and patients to ensure smooth running of the practices. We are a dispensing practice and work closely with the Primary Care Network to provide care for all our patients The practice is a teaching practice, provides NHS and Private Surgery for patients and is innovative and forward thinking and will continue to engage with the local areas to provide services needed for the practice population.

Job responsibilities

Dealing with requests for repeatprescriptions

To check the repeatprescription collection boxes regularly and deal with prescription requests viathe computerized system.

Process tasks appropriatelywhere medication requests require authorization by a GP.

Dispensing medication

To dispense medicationrequested by patients.

To check medications dispensedwhen required

To dispense medications fromthe to follow list.

To issue checked medications topatients and to recheck all requested medication is present.

To take cash (see receptionresponsibilities)

Dealing with the computerised drugs ordering system and special orders.

To maintain adequate stocklevels of drugs, controlled drugs and consumables batteries, bags andboxes.

To receive and check the drugorder against invoices on receipt into the surgery and to put away correctlypaying special attention to controlled and refrigerated drugs.

To return incorrect items tothe wholesalers.

To deal with the specialordering of drugs from suppliers other than AAH ensuring special order form iscompleted.

To contact the dispensarymanager in respect of any queries and problems with drug stocks.

Maintaining an accurate stock level

To enter correctly the drugorder onto the computer database

To check drugs shelves foraccuracy of stock levels.

To ensure generic drugs areentered correctly on the drug database.

To take part in regular stock takeof drugs.

To record and destroy out ofdate drug stocks.

Prescribing

To be aware of the currentrequirements for the endorsing of prescriptions.

General responsibilities for the dispensary

To keep the dispensary andstock cupboards tidy

To check and orderprescription, labels, bags, boxes

To check the drugs waiting forcollections and to remove those over 1 month old.

To read and implement thedispensing fliers.

To ensure dispensing skills arekept up to date, attending appropriate course when requested to do so.
