Job summary

We are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for a Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist to join our team within NELFT. We are looking for an enthusiastic, innovative and motivated individual to join our friendly department as part of our band 5 rotation scheme on a fixed term contract until June 2025.

The post holder will work within the Adult Speech and Language Therapy team and have the opportunity to provide an effective service to patients across NELFT community sites, including the London boroughs of Barking & Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will have a great opportunity to gain new skills and experience, and work in an exciting and dynamic team. They will be working with a range of medical conditions and assessing and treating adult patients with acquired disorders ofcommunication and / orswallowing. They will have a key role in working closely with other MDT staff to ensure holistic patient care. The ideal candidate must be able to work independently as well as part of a team and have good time management and prioritisation skills.

Adult Speech and Language Therapy are a respected and integrated part of the multidisciplinary team, with a positive record of developing innovative and patient centred services. The service runs weekly community videofluoroscopy and FEES clinics, and a monthly joint voice / swallowing clinic with ENT. The team recently set up a student supported Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Programme and has pioneered the provision of laryngectomy care in the community during the pandemic. Clinical support will be provided by the Band 6 / 7 and Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapists. CPD is actively supported through regular clinical supervision, appraisals and excellent training opportunities. The post holder will be encouraged to participate in service development initiatives.

About us

Starting with NELFT

NELFT place a great deal of importance on new starters being properly welcomed and inducted into the Trust. All new starters will join the Trust on the first Monday of each month and will undertake a comprehensive induction of up to two weeks which will include mandatory training, systems training and the allocation of equipment. As part of the process new starters will have the opportunity to also meet the executive team, senior managers and attend a number of drop-in sessions focusing on engagement, health and wellbeing and key processes. The induction will be held at our head office in Rainham, Essex.

Probationary Period

This post will be subject to a probationary period. Internal applicants are exempt from the probationary period (unless you are an internal applicant currently part way through a probationary period or currently a bank member of staff).

High-Cost Area Supplement

This post also attracts payment for High-Cost Area Supplement of 15% of the basic salary (minimum payment of £4,313 and a maximum payment of £5,436) (pro rata for part time staff).

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • NVQ level 2 or equivalent standard of literacy and numeracy
  • Speech and Language Therapy Degree or equivalent
  • HCPC State registration

Desirable

  • Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Show active interest in continuing professional development in line with RCSLT guidelines
  • Evidence of being self-motivated to remain updated with professional practice and new research
  • Post qualification in dysphagia
  • Experience

    Essential

  • Relevant experience of working with adults at undergraduate / post graduate level
  • Working collaboratively with carers and other professionals
  • Desirable

  • Experience of working in a multi-agency and / or multi-disciplinary team
  • Experience of assessing and using specialist equipment
  • Experience of working with patients with dysphagia
  • Knowledge

    Essential

  • An awareness of NHS Plan, NSF and clinical governance priorities
  • Knowledge of acquired communication and swallowing disorders
