Job description

Job summary

There are currentlypathology laboratories at the Worcestershire Royal (Full pathology) andAlexandra Hospitals (providing haematology, and clinical chemistry services).Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS trust Histopathology Department which hasISO 15189 and HTA accreditation is based at Worcester Royal Hospital, withestablished voice recognition and extended BMS role in specimen dissectionincluding all cancer resections.

In 2022 the department hada workload of over 37,000 histology and approx. 5,000 diagnostic cytologyrequests. The current consultant team consists of 6 substantive consultants andtwo locum consultants with 3 vacancies. The Royal College of Pathologistsguidelines for staffing and workload have been implemented for workloadmanagement within the department among consultant Histopathologist.

Main duties of the job

A formal job plan will be agreed between thePost-holder and his / her Clinical Director, on behalf of the Chief MedicalOfficer, three months after the start date of the post. This will be signed by the ChiefExecutive. The job plan for the firstthree months will be based on the provisional timetable shown in the Job Description.

Direct ClinicalCare :

9 PAs on averageper week (includes clinical activity,clinically related activity, predictable & unpredictable emergency work)

Cross-site traveland clinical administration time is included in each session of DCC.

SupportingProfessional Activities :

1 PAs per week(to meet the requirements for revalidation).

Job responsibilities

Thisjob description, together with the job plan, will be reviewed annually andagreed with the Chief Executive, Chief Medical Officer and Clinical Director toensure that it continually reflects the areas of work, clinical responsibilityof the post and purchaser requirements.

Some general duties and responsibilities include :

Thepost-holder will attend cross county & cross site meetings.

Tocollaborate with colleagues to deliver a high quality, timely service and towork towards meeting the Trusts and departmental objectives.

Thepost-holder will develop close collaborative links with Clinicians working inhis / her area of specialist expertise and work to develop services to patientsin these areas to the highest standard, according to departmental protocols andTrust guidance. To include developmentof diagnostic and where appropriate therapeutic protocols and guidelines, whereappropriate this will involve active participation with Primary Carecolleagues.

Person Specification

Management and Administrative Experience

Essential

  • Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
  • Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of specialist service
  • Experience of audit management and conducting clinical audit
  • Desirable

  • Ability to manage and lead specialist unit and working parties as appropriate
  • Ability to use the evidence based and clinical audit to support decision making
  • Qualifications

    Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with a Licence to practise.
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent
  • Desirable

  • Higher degree
  • Entry on Specialist Register in Pathology (or CCT expected within 6 months of interview date)
  • Research Experience

    Essential

  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
  • An awareness of current specialty specific developments and initiatives
  • Desirable

  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last 5 years
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research

  • An understanding of the current NHS environment, particularly in relation to reforms, initiatives and issues
