Job Description

UL Solutions has been an expert in Fire Safety for over 100 years and our Built Environment Lab in Telford provides safety testing and certification services for major customers all across the EMEA region.

We are now looking for a Laboratory Engineer who will support our Fenestration (Windows, Doors, Curtain Walls) and Hardware laboratory team.

The Laboratory Engineer role is split between project handling / management and hands-on testing on specific projects. Primarily, you'll be working directly with the customer to oversee their projects, communicating with them from the start of the enquiry, through to setup and operation. Often you will serve as a technical expert and a project lead for projects, whilst also being responsible for testing, following complex defined test plans and data sheets, then evaluating, explaining, and completing the test reports for intricate customer samples.

Responsibilities

  • Follows complex defined test plans and datasheets with necessary supervision / support.
  • Evaluates test performance and sample operation to properly evaluate test results.
  • Records and explains test results and completes test report.
  • Serves as technical expert and project lead for simple test programs as assigned with the necessary assistance.
  • Communicates project status and results as needed.
  • Holds responsibility for defining test plan, report completion and accuracy, meeting of agreed deadlines, and managing project related activities.
  • Examines complex customer samples and supports laboratory team in executing appropriate tests for each case.
  • Communicates with customers during setup and operation to ensure proper evaluation.
  • Updates Project system and any other relevant portals.
  • Understands specific test standards and product technology for scope of responsibility.
  • Directs, builds and / or adapts advanced test setups and equipment for assigned work, based on test plans and instructions from engineering.
  • May operate and maintain complex test equipment appropriately to measure and test customer samples.
  • May perform complex maintenance on designated test equipment and laboratory area.
  • May perform complex verifications and calibration of test and test equipment.
  • Integrates basic continuous improvement concepts and techniques for both process and equipment.
  • Communicates with management and technical staff to provide suggestions for new equipment, processes, and forms to improve accuracy and efficiencies.
  • Reads and follows the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follows all physical and digital security practices.

Qualifications

  • Whilst it would be great if you had experience in testing door / window and hardware, it is not our expectation. Ideally, you'll have experience in similar environments where testing occurs, ideally in some form of technical environment or where installations / fitting of hardware takes place.
  • It is important that you have some experience of overseeing projects (big or small) and working directly with customers. Maybe you have run your own independent business as a fitter or builder, taking responsibility for scoping projects, budgeting and then seeing it through to delivery.
  • Good communication skills are essential, both internally with our lab & engineering teams, but also externally with customers.
  • You will have an analytical mindset with the ability to evaluate complex requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyse special testing needs.
  • Able to bring ideas to the table on how to improve processes, both internally & externally.
  • Proven team-player and have a team-first mindset.
  • Great time management skills.
  • Proactiveness.
