Paragon referrals are really pleased to be able to offer a novel and innovative Internship for new graduates that will support you in completing the RCVS Vet GDP.
This innovative 17-month internship will start in September 2023 and includes a 2 week induction, 1 of which would be with the primary care 2023 Graduate Development Programme cohort in our pre-start training camp. Following this you will start working within Paragon concentrating on rotations in anaesthesia and ICU to build your clinical skills and confidence in managing complex hospitalised patients. In February you will join our next rotating intern cohort and start a 12-month rotating internship. This programme would be aligned to the RCVS VetGDP and you would follow this with an assigned RCVS Vet GDP advisor.
We understand that there are challenges for new graduates that want to start their careers with an internship within a specialist hospital. This position is a supported start to an internship through close involvement with the Linnaeus GDP programme and can provide a fast track to specialist training as well as return to primary care practice.
Paragon has had great success with previous interns progressing to discipline specific internships and residency programmes, many of whom have progressed within Paragon to join one of our residencies in surgery, medicine, neurology or ophthalmology. Despite our internship being only 5 years old we have had more than 30% of our interns progressing to residency programmes within universities, private practice and at Paragon itself. Being part of Linnaeus also opens up multiple opportunities to pursue a career in our primary care practices or across our network of 14 Specialist led multidisciplinary referral hospitals. Approximately 70% of our 2022 rotating intern cohort were aiming to pursue Specialist training and within that group 84% went straight into a discipline specific internship or residency.
Rotating Interns rotate through a range of disciplines including : Internal Medicine, Soft Tissue Surgery, Orthopaedics, Anaesthesia, Oncology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Neurology. Interns will have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects of anaesthesia, analgesia, and intensive care. Interns have the opportunity to be involved in a research project leading to publication of a paper in a peer-reviewed journal.
Interns will be exposed to a wide variety of cases and develop their skills and knowledge through experiential learning supported by case-based teaching. There is weekly case-related tuition from Specialists and Residents, in addition to a structured CPD program including clinical teaching, research skills and career planning.

What our previous and current interns have to say
I love it, great team.’ Arturs Ivanovs, Present oncology intern, starting an oncology residency at University of Liverpool July 2023
I started at Paragon Referrals when it first opened in 2017 and have progressed through the rotating internship and surgical internship to become a surgery resident. The broad knowledge gained through my internships has been invaluable and has allowed me to progress to my current position. As an intern you have direct mentoring and support with scientific writing and publishing, active involvement in complex cases and regular in house and external teaching. Having had the opportunity to work with multiple cohorts of our interns it is incredible to see how far their skills and confidence have developed by the end of their internship. Aside from the wealth of clinical expertise, my favourite part of working at Paragon is our team, the people are awesome."
