Role purpose
With an increase in Alpha International’s (AI) activities, especially within the areas of data protection, technology, digital and media, we are looking to appoint a lawyer to provide specialist advice in these areas with a strong emphasis on data protection compliance. Additionally, the Legal Counsel will work closely with the AI’s Global General Counsel to provide advice on a variety of matters, including general commercial advice.The role will suit someone who is keen to use their technical legal competence in this unique and fast-paced ministry environment.Key Responsibilities
- Support AI’s Global General Counsel in the provision of legal advice and support to AI and, where appropriate, its global partners.
- Provide appropriate and proportionate legal advice and problem-solving guidance across a range of specialisms and in relation to specialist areas of expertise, namely technology, digital and media, including data protection and privacy advice to teams, and associated implementation, ensuring privacy by design.
- Review, draft and advise on a broad range of commercial contracts and terms of use, ensuring timely progression.
- Provide input into policies, procedures and agreements to ensure legal compliance.
- Develop healthy working relationships with teams under General Counsel’s guidance to develop and ensure clear understanding of legal needs.
- Improving compliance with data protection legislation across the organisation including, through actions to improve GDPR Working Group’s effectiveness, manage data protection audits, privacy impact assessments, compliance assurance.
- Provide legal support in the event of any claims, and maintain and coordinate data breach and reporting processes, providing legal advice if implemented.
- Provide support, as appropriate, to Finance & Risk team and General Counsel in foreign entity creation, and implementation of external tax advice.Maintain a detailed knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, guidance and best practice, requiring proactive research.DescriptionEssential Skills, knowledge and experience
- Fully qualified lawyer authorised to practise in England & Wales
- Excellent understanding and experience of applying data protection (primarily GDPR) legislation and general commercial issues in a global IT / IP / media context with ability to provide pragmatic solutions
- Excellent contract drafting and reviews, attention to detail and communication skills
- Interest in learning, and using transferable legal skills eg research, to support the advisory function

- Team player with initiative, ability to prioritise, and problem-solving attitude in a complex and dynamic context
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office
- Committed, mature and prayerful Christian who is passionate about using their legal talents for Christian purposes Desirable skills, knowledge and experienceDesirable but not essential :
- Knowledge and / or experience of non-English laws especially relating to data, IT / IP / Media, and / or general commercial
- Working knowledge of charity, property or trademark law
- Language skills in languages other than English
- Experience of hosting Alpha either online or in person
