Job overview

As a trust we are seeking to appoint a full time Consultant Physician in General Medicine to join an enthusiastic consultant body managing general internal medicine.

The successful applicants will be based at Basingstoke and Winchester and will have the opportunity to develop our inpatient general medical service.

Opportunities for special interests are available within the job plan including specialty clinic, Diabetes and endocrinology, Infection Disease, Rheumatology, Ambulatory service Point of care ultrasound and teaching, etc.

We are looking for applicants with a wide experience in General Medicine who also have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional skills to lead service developments in the Trust. We are keen to promote education and learning and provide a good educational experience to trainees and have been rated very highly by General Internal Medicine Specialty trainees attached to us in Deanery feedback.

We would welcome those with teaching skills and help support applications for honorary teaching posts at our associated medical school.

The successful candidate will lead a team of junior doctors and multi-disciplinary staff including Physician Associates in providing comprehensive medical care for their inpatients, clinic patients and emergency admissions of all ages. As part of a multidisciplinary team including Specialty registrar equivalents, trust grade SHOs, foundation doctors and Physician Associates, you will be committed to delivering clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with the clinical teams and commissioners.

The hospitals in Basingstoke and Winchester provide a comprehensive range of acute services as well as being a tertiary referral centre for colorectal, liver, peritoneal carcinomatosis, haemophilia and pseudomyxoma surgery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Lead the care of inpatients on a General Internal Medicine / Specialty ward
  • Develop standards, procedures and systems to ensure safe, high quality and efficient patient care from the point of entry to admission or discharge.
  • Work within the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective team working in the provision of acute medical care to patients on a day-to-day basis
  • Develop clinical guidelines to ensure best practice for the management of wide range medical conditions.
  • Play a strong role in risk management and governance.
  • Participate in relevant audit and quality assurance processes.
  • Liaise closely within the department, the emergency and acute medical teams, other in-patient teams and primary and community services to ensure collaborative working arrangements are in place which maximize benefits to patient care
  • Teach and train junior doctors, Physician Associates and students.
  • Become a qualified educational supervisor and work as Clinical and / or Educational Supervisor to a number of trainees dependant on job plan.
  • To teach and train staff in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff as appropriate.
  • Abide by the Clinical & Corporate Governance policies of the Trust.
  • Take part in major incident planning.
  • Take part in the administration of the department and the involvement in the management of resources will be regarded as important.
  • To promote General medicine as a Specialty both within the Trust and externally.

    Professional Qualifications

    Essential criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCP (Paces)
  • Licence to practice and full registration with GMC
  • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register, or within 6 months of completion of CCT at time of interview
  • Advanced Life Support
  • Eligible to work in the UK
  • Desirable criteria

  • Post graduate degree (MSc / PhD)
  • Clinical Experience & Knowledge

    Essential criteria

  • At least 6 months prior UK experience at middle grade / registrar level in one or more a medical specialties
  • Knowledge and experience of NHS
  • Evidence of safe, sound clinical practices
  • Desirable criteria

  • Previous Medicine experience at Consultant level
  • Demonstrate participation in audit and research
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of service improvement
