This post is based at Staffordshire Children's Hospital at Royal Stoke which is part of the University

Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust. The paediatric department at UHNM primarily delivers acute paediatric care to the local children of Staffordshire and beyond.

This post is to provide general paediatric outpatient clinics.

About us

Staffordshire Children's Hospital is part of UHNM which has two sites : Royal Stoke University Hospital, located in Stoke-on-Trent, and County Hospital, located in Stafford. The Staffordshire Children's Hospital is based at the Royal Stoke site, all inpatient services for children are there. Outpatient clinics run at both sites.

The Paediatric Department is one of the largest in the country with a number of sub speciality areas receiving tertiary care referrals. The Trust has a purpose built Children's Centre comprising of inpatient wards, Children's A&E and admissions unit and outpatients department adjacent to the Child Development Centre. The Child Health Directorate provides a wide range of services encompassing acute paediatrics, paediatric and neonatal intensive care, outpatients and community paediatrics. We also provide consultant support to the children's emergency centre and deliver a range of paediatric general and speciality clinics on the County Hospital site.

Job responsibilities

This post is based at Staffordshire Childrens Hospital at Royal Stoke which is part of the University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM) NHS Trust. The paediatric department at UHNM primarily delivers acute paediatric care to the local children of Staffordshire and beyond.

This post is for a General Paediatric Consultant with specialist Childrens Palliative Care. The successful candidate will become part of a team of 15 whole time equivalent consultants delivering acute paediatric services.

  • Participate in the on-call rota of 1 : 12, which includes resident on call up to 10pm weekdays.
  • Take on-going responsibility for patients under your care.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues in other specialties
  • Develop and maintain good communications with General Practitioners and appropriate external
  • Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit. This will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical
  • Ensure own practice is up-to-date. This will involve taking responsibility for own Clinical Professional Development and participating in the Trusts Performance and Annual Review
  • Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of

  • Take responsibility for improving and complying with infection control practices

  • In conjunction with Consultant colleagues, to take responsibility for the best use of directorate staffing and other resources to ensure the maximum efficiency of the directorate
  • In conjunction with the Directorate Manager and Consultant colleagues, to take a role in the daily business of the directorate and to develop the service in accordance with the Trusts strategic direction.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Skills

Essential

  • MRCPCH or equivalent higher qualification
  • Fully registered with GMC
  • APLS, EPALS or PALS provider
  • MBChB / MBBS or equivalent
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining entry on the General Medical Council (GMC) Specialist Register via one of the following : o Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (the proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview) o Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) (You must be on the Specialist Register at the point of your application) o European Community Rights APLS or EPLS or PALS provider
  • Desirable

  • Further Higher Degree, MD, PhD
  • Level 3 safeguarding training
  • Clinical Experience

    Essential

  • Clinical training and experience in general paediatrics equivalent to that required for UK. CCT in paediatrics OR existing Practising Consultant in General paediatrics.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within general paediatrics
  • Experience and understanding of using evidence based medicine and clinical audit to support decision making
  • Experience of or active interest in Paediatric Pallaiitve Care Medicine

  • SPIN accreditation or equivalent for area of sub-speciality
