Highly Specialist Weight Management / Metabolic Syndrome Dietitian, Band 7

We are delighted to be recruiting a full time permanent Highly Specialist Dietitian with experience in weight management and metabolic syndrome to our Nutrition and Dietetic Service, into this new and innovative role. Are you somebody who has a desire to be involved in the development of new nutritional interventions and is passionate about using data capture to advocate for patients newly screened, and diagnosed with conditions associated with steatotic liver disease

Main duties of the job

As part of the Nutrition and Dietetic Department you will deliver innovative nutritional interventions to adult patients with steatotic liver disease, aiming to reduce severity of this condition and the need for secondary care intervention. This will involve :

  • Scoping of current resources
  • Identify current gaps in dietetic services for this patient group and signposting to other services
  • Designing and developing nutritional care pathways appropriate for groups of service users
  • Designing and developing individualised nutritional care pathways as appropriate.

This role will provide interventions for altered liver function, obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Intervention will be provided in the form of 1 : 1 or group sessions both virtually and face to face. It will involve working closely with our Primary care, Integrated Care Board (ICB) and Hepatology colleagues You will also have the opportunity to liaise with and network with Dietetic peers in existing Gastroenterology, Diabetes, Specialist Weight Management and Eating disorder services. You will be collecting and analysing data and be responsible for reporting back on the impact of these high quality nutritional interventions and outcomes to the ICB, dietetic Service Leads and the liver screening steering group for this initiative. You will be well integrated with the dietetics department and will participate in regular clinical updates and department wide meetings .

Job responsibilities

There are 2 parts to this exciting role

The patient facing part of the role will provide dietetic expertise as part of the new Steatotic Liver Disease (SLD) MDT project in Gloucestershire by outreaching into Gloucestershires brand new state of the art Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC). The project is aimed at identifying and treating those at risk of steatotic liver disease. This role will provide assessment, identification and interventions for altered liver function alongside co existing conditions such as obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and altered liver function. This care will be in the form of 1 : 1 and group sessions both virtually and face to face.

To complement the clinical part of this role ideally we are looking for candidates who have worked in a wide range of clinical areas and settings including weight management, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes and hepatology. The clinical presentation of this patient group can vary. Through early dietetic input robust assessment by the post holder using their advanced knowledge and skills should help to identify unmet clinical and nutritional needs for this patient group.

The non - clinical part of this role offers the successful candidate an opportunity to design, develop and deliver innovative nutritional interventions to support adult patients with liver disease related to fat accumulation in the liver. This includes auditing clinical interventions with a key aim of this project to reduce severity and progression of these conditions and the need for referral to secondary care for treatments. This will involve a scoping of current resources, identifying unmet clinical and nutritional patients needs, designing and developing group and individual patient pathways in delivering nutritional care.

A main part of this role includes dedicated project management time to collect and analyse data from your dietetic interventions, scope the needs of this patient group, influence the designing of new pathways and advocate the nutritional needs of the service users. Your findings will help shape future directions of nutritional treatment pathways for this patient cohort.

We have established dietetic peers in diabetes, specialist weight management (SWMS), gastroenterology eating disorders services. Liaising with these colleagues will be a frequent expectation of this post to ensure good use of resources and collaborative development of new liver screening pathways. The role will also involve signposting to alternative services such Healthy Lifestyle programmes and local social prescribing initiatives. You will be working as part of the local Nutrition and Dietetics Department, we are a large friendly department with specialist clinical teams across the Trust here to support you in this new role. We have a dedicated education team to support you in your career development and this role. Informal visits and contacts are encouraged.

Person Specification

Qualifications, Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Degree / Diploma in Dietetics
  • Registered with HCPC
  • Attendance on relevant accredited courses with evidence of CPD and IT literacy skills
  • Training and / or demonstrated experience in Leadership and Development
  • Experience of working within the NHS
  • Demonstrate specialist clinical knowledge in Hepatology and / or weight management and Diabetes
  • Demonstrate knowledge and experience of leading and managing projects, and leading change
  • Demonstrate specialist clinical knowledge in decision making for Nutritional interventions
  • Demonstrate knowledge / experience of service development identify development needs / gaps for service provision
  • Develop and deliver training materials to a variety of audiences
  • Demonstrate a willingness to be flexible in service delivery cope with working across sites and within the county in a busy and changing environment with ability to remain professional calm & in control during busy phases in all tasks
  • Experience of effectively maintaining working relationship within a team with The ability to inspire, influence, persuade, negotiate and handle sensitive situations well
  • Ability to manage and prioritise workloads and meet deadlines
  • Experience of Leading and managing staff and responsibility for clinical supervision of junior staff and students
  • Desire to deliver a high-quality service. Ability to assess individuals with complex medical problems and to plan their dietetic care
