POSITION : Care Assistant
RESPONSIBLE TO : Senior Carer
ACCOUNTABLE TO : Home Manager
SHIFT PATTERN : 7.45 am – 3 pm, and 2.45 pm – 10 pm five times a week including alternate weekends.
PURPOSE OF POSITION :
1. To share with other staff in meeting the personal care
needs of residents in a way that respects the dignity of the individual and promotes independence.
2. To help in the care of the residents’ physical environment and in the general day-to-day activities of
the Home.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
1. Assist residents who need help with dressing, undressing, bathing and toileting.
2. Help residents with mobility problems and other physical disabilities, including incontinence; help in use and care of aids and personal equipment.
3. Care of residents temporarily sick and needing help and support.
4. Help care for residents who are dying.
5. Help in the promotion of mental and physical activity of residents through talking to them, sometimes listening patiently when they want to share a confidence or talk about their earlier lives or their families; sharing with them in activities such as reading, writing, hobbies, light exercise, recreation and games.
6. Make and change beds; tidy rooms and do light cleaning; empty commodes where necessary.
7. Inspect, launder, label and mend residents’ clothing.
8. Set tables and trays; serve meals and drinks; feed residents who need help; prepare light meals and wash up; tidy and clear the dining room.
9. Answer call bells immediately. In the case of an emergency, alert or summon help from another member of the staff at once.
10. Answer the door and the telephone; greet visitors and make them welcome.
11. Read and write reports, take part in staff and residents’ meetings and in training activities as directed.
12. Such other duties, as may be required.
The shift times for carers are 7.45 am – 3 pm, and 2.45 pm – 10 pm five times a week including alternate weekends.
