Job description

Job summary

A newly created Full-time or part-time post for one permanent Consultant Microbiologist plus. Applicants with dual accreditation in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases are also welcome to apply, where there will be further opportunities to expand clinical services if required.

Applications are also welcome for a fully accredited Clinical Scientist. The post is full time with a 10 PA allocation and A rating (8%) for Out of Hours work but consideration would be given for either part time or job share.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Service :

  • To liaise with clinicians, hospital staff, medical microbiologists, general practitioners and consultants in Communicable Disease, concerning the diagnosis and management of patients, control and prevention of infections, including the provision of telephone advice.
  • Participate in daily ward round for ICU, Emergency Assessment Units, Acute Medical Units and other wards as needed. Twice weekly ward rounds to Haematology / Oncology, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Surgical Hot week rounds and once weekly diabetic foot rounds.
  • Twice weekly Virtual ward rounds for the OPHAT Service with the Medical Admission Avoidance Team.
  • Participating in an ongoing medical audit programme within the department and participating in multidisciplinary clinical audit.
  • Preparing, implementing and reviewing guidelines and Apps for the management of infection, with particular emphasis on those relating to antimicrobial prescribing when assuming lead role.
  • Complying with agreedTSDFTmanagement guidelines.

Academic Facilities - there is a large well-equipped Post Graduate Centre with lecture theatre and seminar rooms plus a library on site. TSDFT is committed to continuing professional development (CPD). Funds are allocated to each consultant on an annual basis.

Legal, Qualification & Training

Essential

  • Full and Specialist registration (and with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview (CCT date).
  • If an applicant is UK trained, they must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. If an applicant is non-UK trained, they will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
  • Primary Medical Qualification (MB CHB or equivalent).
  • FRCPath or equivalent qualification.
  • Desirable

  • MRCP(UK) or equivalent qualification
  • Higher Degree MSc or PhD
  • Evidence of additional qualification relevant to microbiology, virology and infection, prevention & control.
  • Clinical Experience & Training

    Essential

  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in clinical microbiology and infection control.
  • Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practice Understanding of clinical governance and the individual responsibilities it implies.
  • Knowledge of the principles of clinical audit and evidence of participation.
  • Desirable

  • Experience in clinical virology and molecular diagnostic virology / bacteriology.
  • OPAT experience.
  • Management and administration

    Essential

  • Understanding of the management responsibilities of NHS consultants.
  • Ability to plan strategically and to exercise sound judgements when faced with conflicting pressures.
  • Broad range of IT skills.
  • Ability to take responsibility and show evidence of leadership
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical management and leadership.

  • Participation in a management training course
  • Experience with developing Apps.
