Job summary

Join us at an exciting time where four NHS Trusts have fused to create a new Trust - Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

We are seeking two (10 PAs) highly motivated and dedicated Consultants to support our Special Care Dental Service in providing specialised dental care for children who are unable to access dental care in the General Dental Service because of their additional needs.

The successful applicants will be expected to provide a full range of services in Paediatric Dentistry, including provision of dental care under inhalational sedation, and general anaesthesia (GA). There will be an expectation that the post holder will be willing to provide direct clinical care and / or supervision in both Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Main duties of the job

  • To provide a Consultant led specialist oral health care service for the Special Care and Paediatric Dental Service
  • To provide dental care for patients with additional needs across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight requiring specialist services under local anaesthetic, sedation and general anaesthesia
  • To contribute to Leadership and management across the Service line
  • To line manage Senior Dental Officers and Dental Officers
  • To participate in clinical and other Service line activities with the objective of ensuring a high standard of patient care
  • Contribute to the clinical supervision of postgraduates and to assist delivery of the PgCert in Conscious Sedation
  • Participate in training and education of colleagues including dentists in training
  • To establish Specialty training posts in Paediatric Dentistry
  • Provide leadership in development of patient pathways and management of clinical services, policies and procedures
  • Ensure that activity is delivered in line with contractual UDA targets and Key Performance Indicators

Up to 10 PAs are available for each role. A full-time work programme will typically comprise 8 sessions of direct clinical care and 2 sessions of supporting professional activities.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Applicants must be fully registered with the GDC and on the GDC Specialist Register in Paediatric Dentistry, be accredited or within six months of such accreditation at interview stage and have completed a SAC approved training programme or have demonstrated equivalent experience and training to allow entry to the specialist list by mediated entry. They must be currently listed on the NHS Dental Performers List, England.

  • Experience / training such that the applicant has reached a standard considered equivalent to that expected after 3 years of specialist training in Paediatric Dentistry.Experience in providing dental care for a full range of patients managed by the Special Care Dental ServiceRecent experience of planning and delivering dental treatment for patients with complex needs using a range of conscious sedation techniquesRecent experience of planning and performing comprehensive dental care to paediatric patients under general anaesthesiaRecent experience in treating medically compromised patientsRecent experience in treating paediatric patients who have experienced dental trauma
