About Ofcom

As the UK’s communications regulator, we’re delivering vital work that helps keep the UK connected and shapes the future of how we’ll stay connected with each other.

Our work covers everything from phones and broadband, through to TV, radio, the postal service, and wireless devices. We have also taken on the challenge of making the online world a safer place. And we need people of all backgrounds, skill sets, and experiences to help us achieve our goal of making communications work for everyone.

The Role

Ofcom has a requirement for a consultant with expertise in journalism training and programme delivery. The consultant will work closely with an organisation, or organisations, who have been commissioned by Ofcom to deliver news literacy programmes in the UK.

The organisation, or organisations, are delivering programmes that improve adults’ media literacy skills, specifically that they will have a better understanding of how news is produced, ideally through having produced their own local news reports.

Ofcom therefore requires a consultant with expertise in how to produce news stories across a range of media to work with the commissioned organisation or organisations. The successful applicant will train delivery staff at the commissioned organisation or organisations in core journalism skills including how to find, produce and share local multimedia news stories. The consultant will have a strong track record in the teaching of news and wider journalism practice.

They will have experience of journalism training in workplaces and demonstrable experience working on projects exploring how journalism skills can empower people to share their lived experience. We require experience of working with community or voluntary sector organisations.

Successful applicants will be comfortable working in a range of settings. They will be able to support the commissioned organisation, or organisations, to successfully deliver journalism training to their participants and build capacity within that organisation in this area.

Requirements of the role

  • Build relationships with the commissioned organisation / s in order to understand their current news production expertise
  • Act as an expert advisor / support for the commissioned organisation / s as they develop their journalism training approach
  • Review and feedback on news production workshop plans produced by the commissioned organisation / s
  • Guide the commissioned organisation / s on disseminating news outputs from the programmes that work best for the target audiences
  • Familiarise themselves with Ofcom’s media literacy programme in particular the What Works in the delivery of media literacy interventions approach

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Journalism training skills : Experience of teaching news production skills across a range of media
  • Project management skills : Experience of delivering projects on time, and to a high standard
  • Relationship building skills : Ability to build and maintain working relationships with a broad range of people, including Ofcom internal stakeholders
  • Communication skills : Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written with experience of delivering to variety of levels of seniority
  • Teamwork and leadership skills : Demonstrate planning and organisational skills, and the ability to collaborate with and incorporate insights from a range of colleagues
  • Experience of delivering journalism training in workplaces
  • Understanding of news literacy
  • This role will suit someone who has flexibility to offer their services on an ad hoc basis for a period up to two years and can be worked alongside other commitments.

At Ofcom we prioritise inclusive and diverse recruitment in order to truly reflect the society we represent.

Where positions are listed as full time, we remain open to reduced hours, part-time arrangements, job shares and other flexible working options from day one of employment. We warmly welcome applications from candidate returning to work after a break – for whatever reason.

As a disability confident employer, we offer interviews to any disabled applicant who meet essential criteria for advertised roles. Learn more about the scheme here.
