Are you a Consultant with a background in Glaucoma?

This is a great opportunity to take up a Consultant position in our Ophthalmology department based at the Royal Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust. The appointee will join the existing team of 12 dedicated Ophthalmologists, with a further 10 Speciality and Specialist doctors. We are looking for someone who is dynamic and enthusiastic with a range of skills to compliment and develop our services.

Most outpatient activity takes place in a purpose built dedicated Out-patient Department on the Royal Cornwall Hospital site in Truro. Additional clinics are held in community hospitals around Cornwall.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to use your skills and experience to further develop local services and deliver excellent care, whilst benefiting from the incredible lifestyle that Cornwall has to offer, in an organisation that values work / life balance, with a job plan that enables you to make the most of living here. You will have access to two full theatre sessions per week at our brand new theatre site in St Austell.

A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and the Clinical Director and consultant colleagues on behalf of the Medical Director based on the needs of the department and the strengths / interests of the individual appointed to ensure we have the flexibility to recruit the very best applicant.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of Ophthalmology.
  • To share with colleagues responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Ophthalmology Department.
  • Teaching and training of junior staff, and opportunity to teach medical students within the University of Exeter Medical School.
  • To have responsibility for ensuring active participation in continuing medical education (CME).
  • Provision, with Specialty Grade and Trust Doctor colleagues, of a service to the Royal Cornwall Hospitals' NHS Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
  • Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.
  • Any responsibility that relates to a special interest.
  • Professional supervision of other junior medical staff.
  • Responsibilities for carrying out teaching (where applicable).
  • Participating in medical audit, the Trust's Clinical Governance processes and in continuing Professional Development.
  • Involvement in research (where applicable).
  • Where it is agreed between the parties, work on behalf of the Royal Cornwall Hospitals' NHS Trust such as domiciliary consultations, or services provided by the Trust for other agencies, for example, the prison service
  • A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.

About us

The Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust (RCHT) is the main provider of acute and specialist care services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. We serve a population of around 500,000 people - a figure that can increase significantly with

visitors during the busiest times of the year. We employ approximately 6,700 staff and have a budget of approximately £580 million.

We are a teaching hospital in partnership with the University of Exeter Medical School, University of Plymouth School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Peninsula Dental School.

The Knowledge Spa on the Royal Cornwall Hospital site is the base for medical and nursing as well as ongoing education for health professions in clinical and non-clinical roles.

Keeping at the forefront of medical advances, we are continually developing our clinical services as well as our facilities and are committed to maximising the range of specialist care that can be offered locally. Allied to this is a growing reputation for research and innovation.
