We are seeking a highly motivated laboratory scientist to join the Clinical Biomarker Laboratory, in the Biomarker and Bioanalytical Platforms (BBP) department in Precision Medicine (PMed) based at the GSK Clinical Unit (CUC) in Cambridge, UK.  The successful candidate will work as part of a team that provides Biomarker sample study support by working with multiple different sample types / matrices from FTIH, Enabling and Translational Studies, in a GCP regulated laboratory.

Key Responsibilities

As a lab-based scientist, you will :

  • Generate high quality samples received directly from the Clinical Unit and other sources, examples to include :

PBMC from fresh whole blood.

  • Fresh whole blood stimulations (e.g. plate-based assays or Truculture Tubes) and subsequent plasma harvesting.
  • Preparation of fresh tissue samples to FFPE block, sectioning and the use of automation to stain and scan histological sections.
  • Process fresh cellular samples, blood, PBMC to prepare single cell preparations suitable for downstream molecular quantification, including relevant QC testing.
  • Generate high quality data from fresh whole blood or PBMC (real time) to support FTIH, Enabling & Translational studies by spectral flow cytometry (Cytek Aurora) including sample preparation and sample acquisition.
  • Demonstrating innovation and the capacity to learn and evaluate new biomarker techniques and methodologies.
  • Handle human biological samples and perform experimental work in accordance with GCP and Human Tissue Act (HTA) regulations, environmental safety assessments and data integrity guidelines.
  • Work as part of the team to ensure day-to-day laboratory responsibilities are met, including co-ordinating maintenance of laboratory equipment and performing regular end-user maintenance activities.
  • Available for occasional off-hour study support when required.
  • Function well with and have clear lines of communication across multiple other groups within the CUC, for example the Clinical Processing Laboratory, the Clinical Ward, the Clinical Development Managers.
  • Act as a contact between the Clinical Biomarker Laboratory and teams not based at the CUC, for example with other groups within BBP, Respiratory, Immunology and Inflammation Research Unit (RIIRU), RIIRU Translational Unit (RITU) etc.
  • Closely collaborate and provide lab support and sample analysis for the biomarker assay team at Stevenage as needed.
  • Strong attention to detail and production of high-quality electronic laboratory notebook write ups.
  • Basic Qualifications

    We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals :

  • BSc or MSc degree in biological sciences or a relevant scientific field.
  • Prior experience or understanding of working in a GCP setting.
  • Strong laboratory experience and expertise working with a variety of sample types including whole blood, PBMC, single-cell tissue suspensions or tissue biopsies, which may be infected with blood-borne pathogens such as HBV.
  • Ability to maintain a disciplined approach, ensuring a relentless focus on quality, compliance, and operational excellence even when flexing between multiple projects.
  • Be a highly motivated team player with the ability to interact effectively within a multi-disciplinary team but also the confidence to work independently to tight deadlines.
  • Good judgment and decision making, especially for prioritising multiple requests with the ability to problem solve and troubleshoot.
  • Track record of delivering high quality, in a timely fashion with a positive can-do and attitude.
  • Preferred Qualifications

    If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus :

  • A good understanding of the drug development process.
  • Strong laboratory experience and understanding of clinical and non-clinical biomarker assays.
  • Experience of writing SOPs and other regulated documents.
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills.
