Renfrewshire Council is looking to recruit a highly motivated individual to oversee the operation of the Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside (CWRR) Clyde Crossing – the first opening road bridge over the River Clyde.
The crossing is a twin‑leaf swing bridge for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, linking communities in Renfrew and Glasgow / West Dunbartonshire. As Infrastructure and Operations Officer, you will have overall responsibility for the operation and control of the bridge, which includes ensuring that the bridge is opened as required to allow the passage of river vessels.
Based permanently at the CWRR Clyde Crossing Control Building situated next to the structure (in Renfrew on the southern side), you will be responsible for the general day-to-day management and operation of the Clyde Crossing Bridge, reporting to the Bridge and Structures Manager with responsibility for managing at least one Roads Infrastructure Co-ordinator.
Team members will be based in the control room building at the bridge and will be an important part of the Climate, Public Protections & Roads service in Environment, Housing and Infrastructure. The team will be led by a Bridges and Structures Manager with each shift having 2 team members working on a 4 on 4 off shift pattern with 1 Infrastructure and Operations Officer and 1 Infrastructure and Operations Coordinator on each shift. The role will involve both dayshift and nightshift hours with associated enhancements paid for night time working.
Although the role will be on a 37hr per week basis the role will also require 1.5 hours of contractual overtime to be paid each week, taking the working week up to 38.5hours.
The CWRR Clyde Crossing operations team are an important part of the Climate, Public Protections & Roads service in Environment, Housing and Infrastructure. In our service, we are committed to delivering Renfrewshire’s plan for Net Zero, delivering the capital investment programme and generally supporting the economic regeneration and revitalisation of town centres with a specific focus on the public realm and transport access. As a key part of the team, your duties will extend beyond just opening and closing the bridge, you will also be involved in the delivery of the Council’s capital investment programme for bridges and structures across the Council portfolio. You must either hold a degree or professional qualification in a relevant subject or the ability to evidence the equivalent level of knowledge / training / experience required.
You must be an effective communicator, possess a strong understanding of health and safety including monitoring the safety of site operatives and public users in the environment where necessary and have a high level of computer literacy, being able to understand and interrogate control system information and have experience at a senior level of working in remote operational control room facilities or undertaking remote communications from an operational control room.
It is also essential you have the ability to provide direction, leadership and support to site team and be able to prioritise workloads and in managing competing demands.
Training on specific systems will be provided as part of the role, such as VHF radio training.
