Job description

Salary : From £65,000 (experience dependant).

Location : Hybrid and flexible working arrangement, with home working and in any of our offices (Northallerton, Otley, Kendal or Cockermouth), including some travel to other sites.

Contract : Permanent, full-time (Monday – Friday)

We are looking for a Technical Director who specialises in Flood Risk and Hydraulic Modelling to shape and lead a dedicated team of hydraulic modellers and engineers at Align Property Services.

This is a new role at Align, giving you the opportunity to take a lead in hydraulic modelling in the business and truly make it your own. You will have the opportunity for establishing best practices, driving innovation, and contributing to the success of our projects related to water systems and infrastructure.

We are an award-winning building design consultancy and are proud to have been recently named the Regional Energy Consultancy and Regional New Build Project of the year for our recent work with Darlington Borough Council at the North East Energy Efficiency Awards.

Align Property Services is a Limited Company, wholly owned by North Yorkshire Council and we are one of the largest multi-discipline building design consultancies in the North of England. We are collaborative in the way we work, offering a broad range of services in Architecture, Sustainability, Building Surveying, Project Management, Civil & Structural, Transport Planning, Bridges, Highways & Drainage Engineering, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, Quantity Surveying, CD, Property Advisory & Estate Management.

You will use your extensive experience of this sector and your background in flood risk consulting to validate and provide guidance on 1D / 2D hydraulic modelling techniques to support Flood Risk Assessments, Flood Alleviation Schemes and Drainage Strategies on a wide range of schemes. Using Hydraulic software packages of your choice, you will work with our current team of Flood Risk Engineers and Technicians to deliver projects that meet client requirements whilst providing technical support to others.

You will be at the heart of Align Property Services and bring your drive, motivation and ambition to be part of a large growth we are seeing in this sector.

To be successful in this position, you will be able to demonstrate the following essential skills and qualifications :

  • Degree in Geography, Civil or Environmental Engineering or equivalent with post-qualification experience that enables you to manage project delivery and provide leadership within an engineering consultancy.
  • Proven record delivering Flood Alleviation schemes, Flood Risk Assessments and Drainage Strategies. Deep knowledge of the regulatory system to ensure that designs and projects comply with relevant laws and regulations.
  • Proficiency in engineering software tools, such as Autocad, QGIS and Hydraulic Modelling software (e.g., Infodrainage, Flow, HEC-RAS, TUFLOW, Flood Modeller)
  • Strong project management skills, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Able to communicate effectively with team members, clients, stakeholders, and regulatory authorities.
  • Leadership skills such as mentoring & team building and engage in activities involved in staying up to date with the latest advancements, technologies, and industry trends to provide cutting-edge solutions and maintain your expertise.
  • High standard of ethics and professionalism is essential in any engineering role. This includes ensuring the safety, reliability, and ethical considerations of your designs and decisions.
  • Ability to work with clients directly or through project managers. Building and maintaining strong client relationships, understanding their needs, and ability to manage expectations.
  • Membership with CIWEM or working towards membership of this professional body.
  • Full UK driving license.
