Civil Engineering is all about creating, improving, maintaining, and protecting the environment in which we live; from ensuring a constant supply of water, to designing, constructing and maintaining roads and bridges. Civil Engineers are the foundation for the essential facilities needed in everyday life and crucial to our future, ensuring we have the infrastructure we need and the ability to adapt to new challenges we face.
Here at Devon County Council, we’re looking for Apprentice Civil Engineering Technicians to join our well-respected scheme, working in our Highways, Infrastructure Development and Waste Management Service. You’ll have a real passion and enthusiasm for engineering and be fully committed to achieving great results in your work and in your studies. Highways Development Management work on the approval of developers' infrastructure plans, across Exeter, East and Mid Devon.
Joining the two year programme on an advanced or higher apprenticeship, you’ll have a structured training programme in either our Engineering Design or Highways and Traffic Management group whilst working towards gaining the level 3 or 4 apprenticeship for Civil Engineering Technicians at a local college.
Alongside completing your apprenticeship qualification, as part of the programme you’ll also have the opportunity to work in one or more of the following areas :
- Highway Design,
- Bridges and Structures (including bridge maintenance),
- Highways and Traffic Management which maintains, operates and improves the highway network
- or Highways Development Management working on the approval of developers' infrastructure plans.
In addition, you’ll also benefit from :
To apply :
For the advanced level 3 scheme, you’ll need a minimum of 5 GCSE’s with a grade C / 4 or above in English and Science and a grade B / 6 or above in maths (or equivalent).
Alternatively, on the higher-level 4 programme ideally you will already have a level 3 qualification in Civil Engineering or 3 A levels grades A-C including maths (or equivalent).
For both schemes you should also be able to demonstrate an understanding of engineering issues and show a real aptitude for the role and a passion to learn more. You’ll be a real team player, ready to get stuck in, make the most of opportunities that come your way and thrive in a well-respected career. Good written and verbal skills are also important as you’ll be interacting with a range of people internally and externally, on a daily basis.
Successful candidates will be matched to either a Level 3 Civil Engineering Technician or Level 4 Construction Technician Apprenticeship standard, depending on previous qualifications and experience.
