The Role

This is an opportunity to join a dedicated group of academics in the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, which runs a varied programme of research-led, accredited courses, complementing most aspects of the pharmaceutical industry, from drug discovery through to market authorisation. Your role will be to develop and deliver industrially focused application of Chemistry to Pharmaceutically relevant challenges / diseases. You will plan, deliver, and assess a range of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the above and related areas, using a variety of approaches. This will include classroom and practical work in our modern, well-equipped laboratories. It is expected that you will establish an independent programme of research and / or enterprise activity, using the latest instrumentation supported by numerous faculty and University-led competitive funding schemes, for emerging researchers, including PhD studentships. You will play an active role in the work of the department outside the classroom - for example outreach, open days and personal tutoring.

The Person

You will use your subject expertise in medicinal and analytical chemistry for the applications of drug design and development, with a particular focus on approaches that target prevalent worldwide illnesses. You will be imparting practical scientific knowledge, and real-world skills to students making them sought after in their future careers.

The ideal applicant will therefore have academic, and preferably industrial experience in drug design, synthesis, and analysis. In addition to your undergraduate degree, you will hold a doctorate in a relevant medicinal chemistry / pharmaceutical chemistry related discipline. You will also be a flexible team worker, responsive to needs of the department. On a personal level, your core motivation will be to deliver exceptional teaching, research, and support to our students.

By the end of the probation period, you must have achieved the relevant level of UKPSF recognition (if this has not already been obtained). For those new to teaching, this will be through our accredited Introduction to Learning and Teaching and for those experienced in teaching, through our Kingston Academic Practice Standards Framework.

The Faculty

You will be based within the Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences which sits within the School of Life Sciences, Pharmacy & Chemistry within the wider faculty of Health, Science, Social Care and Education.

We have invested heavily in the development of new facilities, with our laboratories providing access to ultra-modern equipment and teaching facilities in areas such as biochemistry, biotechnology, cell and molecular biology, immunology, microbiology, nutrition, pharmacology, sport science (including biomechanics and an environmental testing chamber), chemical synthesis and analysis, pharmaceutics, specialist labs for pharmacy practice, pharmaceutical science and chemistry, a forensic scene-of-crime house and a pharmacy dispensing simulation suite.

The Department of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences houses courses in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Science and Pharmacology. The academic team is made up of colleagues with wide ranging research and teaching expertise from sustainability, materials chemistry, forensic toxicology, pharmaceutical chemistry and analytical chemistry, as well as pedagogic interests in Inclusivity. We've invested heavily in the development with teaching and research laboratories. A £6.8million investment into state-of-the-art STEM facilities ensures our labs provide students with access to ultra-modern equipment in a wide range of teaching facilities, in areas such biotechnology, cell and molecular biology, chemical synthesis, analytical and pharmaceutics.
