Location(s) : Portsmouth Area
Salary : £34,564 - £37,147 (pay award pending)
Hours : Full Time (42 hours per week including a one hour paid lunch break, with the option to flex your working hours to suit you)
The Role
As Assistant Maintenance Manager, you’ll be a key part of the team that maintains the estate of our unique organisation. This includes a range of modern and historic buildings which provide essential training facilities, workshops and office space to our people. It’s an essential role that enables truly important work to take place, where you’ll be empowered to supervise your team members, and deputise for senior managers when required.
Working alongside our Property and Maintenance Managers, you’ll be part of the small but essential in-house team that keeps our estate safe, compliant and well-maintained. In partnership with external contractors, consultants and suppliers, you’ll ensure health and safety processes are always followed, that documentation is kept up-to-date, and that any risks are escalated appropriately.
Day-to-day you’ll manage members of a small maintenance team, ensuring all planned, routine and reactive tasks are completed within agreed timescales. You’ll also provide cover for the Estates Maintenance Manager in their absence. And with the opportunity for cross-team working within our organisation, you’ll get the chance to grow your career in a number of different directions, all with our support.
About You
You’ll hold a City & Guilds, NVQ, or equivalent Level 2 qualification with a mechanical or electrical focus, along with a full UK driving license (manual) and a forklift license. You’ll have an awareness of how to safely handle asbestos, along with an appreciation for health and safety procedures on site. And your industry experience means you’ll have a sound working knowledge of allied trades like carpentry, plumbing and decorating, as well as being comfortable communicating with colleagues to get jobs done efficiently and to a high standard.
If you already have experience in facilities maintenance, then this would be beneficial, but this isn’t essential. We’ll consider all applications from candidates with potential, and training will be provided to get you up to speed.
Training and Development
We’re invested in you, which is why we offer plenty of on-the-job training to support you in your role. You’ll also have the opportunity and funding to complete external qualifications to help you grow your career, including IOSH Managing Safely, RIBA Awareness and a range of British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) qualifications.
Rewards and Benefits
You’ll receive a starting salary of £34,564 - £37,147 (depending on skills and experience) with a pay award pending, plus other benefits including :
- 25 Days Annual Leave automatically rising to 30 days after 5 years' service, and an additional 10.5 days public and privilege holidays
- Opportunities to be recognised through our employee performance scheme
- Interest-free season ticket loan
- Excellent pension scheme
- Cycle to work scheme
- Facilities such as a gym, restaurant and on-site coffee bars (at some locations)
- Paid parental and adoption leave.
Equal Opportunities
Diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. This includes diversity in every sense of the word : those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
We’re Disability Confident
We are proud to have achieved Leader status within the DWP’s Disability Confident scheme. This is aimed at encouraging employers to think differently about disability and take action to improve how they recruit, retain and develop disabled people. Being Disability Confident, we aim to offer a person-to-person interview to any candidate who self-identifies as disabled and meets the essential criteria for the role. This is our ‘Offer of Interview’ (OOI). To secure an interview for this vacancy, the essential criteria (in order of application process) are :

Eligibility
This role is for a government organisation which requires the highest security clearance, known as Developed Vetting (DV). The requirement for security clearance means you will need to be British and to have lived in the UK for at least 7 of the last 10 years but we do assess each case individually. There are some common exceptions, like studying abroad, living overseas with parents, or serving with HM Forces. We’ll just need references for the time you lived abroad.
