Salary
£30,166.00–£33,010.00 yearly
Job description

If you’re a natural people-person – someone who enjoys solving problems and learning new skills – this customer-facing role will fit perfectly around your life.

We have 6  positions available for, Customer Engineer (x4) and Specialist Engineer (x2) .

As our Customer Engineer and Specialist Engineer you’ll partner in the field and also virtually with a Technical Delivery Advisor from our Manchester Mobile Centre. Your primary focus will be to fault find and fix assets called …(click to see what we mean), mainly located in large towns and cities, stadiums and train stations.

These hubs are modern digital screen units that reinvent the iconic public phone box for our digital age!

So what makes them modern and high tech? Well, with over 900 street hubs located in high-footfall areas, millions of people can pass a Street Hub every day. And with calling and Wi-Fi capability built in, our local communities are always just a few taps away from connectivity. The two 75 inch digital screens display 10 second intervals of commercial content and a wide range of local community specific content, they are also touch screen to enable access to local information including navigation and charging ports for public use.

When you’re not fixing Street Hubs we’ll look to you to think on your feet. You’ll run solo on either a RAN site (Radio Access Network) boosting regional performance of our market leading 4G and 5G EE network and / or over to our traditional Payphone kiosks to carry out maintenance, repair and installations.

So, what’s the job exactly?

These are jobs that get you out and about. You’ve probably seen BT Engineers around – they’re the women and men in purple vans, fixing things like :

  • Street Hub assets - you’ll install, set up, optimise and repair (where repair means simple remedy e.g. restart hub or change user settings) on Street Assets which contain pre-configured routers and switches.
  • Payphone Kiosks – you’ll repair payphone faults, change glass panels and general maintenance of the kiosk.
  • RAN (Radio Access Network) – you’ll carry out fixes on the network from Mobile Network Operators, from swapping out faulty boxes ensuring services are back up and running, simple structured cabling e.g. running additional Fibres, completing health checks ensuring sites are safe, running as it should be and interrogating any alarms and finally carry out activation work. You won’t be fully alone, you’ll be co-working with our Manchester Mobile Centre team to ensure all services are ‘lit up’ and good to go.
  • HM Prison Service  - you’ll repair phones across the prison, you’ll work in a pair and be accompanied by a site escort. We’ll need you to achieve security clearance (5 years minimum residency in the UK) to enable you to carry out this work.
  • Conduct simple Wi-Fi and mobile signal surveys , recommending installation locations and install access points

As our Specialist Engineer additionally we’ll look to you to complete;

  • Technical tasks - such as setting up or changing configurations, running diagnostic tests, and cabling. You’ll need to be electrically qualified or willing to complete the 18th edition C&G electrical standard.
  • Field work - you’ll take the lead on field sites to carry out standard and non-standard installations, repairs, in-life changes, and solve problems. Responsibilities include ensuring the serviceability and functionality of street assets, coordinating with various stakeholders for repairs and upgrades.
  • Safety - ensure the safety of the public and colleagues.
  • Customer interaction - excellent empathy and listening skills to engage in effective conversations with customers, suppliers and senior management.
  • Check out our Engineer page to watch a video bringing to life what our fab engineers do on a typical day.

So, what are our must haves?

  • A valid manual UK driving licence, a 90-minute travel requirement is expected, hence the need for a driver license being essential.
  • Comfortable with working at height, (the RAN specific equipment we maintain is located on roofs and high-rise buildings).
  • For our Customer Engineer role we welcome people with no technical experience however we’d be looking for your demonstrable customer service, problem solving and technical learning mindset. Where we receive an exceptional volume of applications relevant skills and experience will take priority.
  • What we’ll be doing for you

We’ll provide your daily schedule, a uniform, laptop, mobile and a van to get you out to customers.

In no time we’ll get you working safely in the street through specific inhouse training including NRSWA, PASMA, IPAF and develop you to work towards an 18th Edition C&G electrical standard so you can support your team when working together.

As our Specialist Engineer we’ll expect you to attend and pass the 18th Edition C&G electrical standards course so you can support the Customer Engineer when working together.

Things to love about the role

Hear from Sue one of our Customer Engineers, “I love that I'm self-managed, each day is different work - from Street hubs to payphones to cell sites. The work’s all varied in different areas and my day flies by.”

And Jake, one of our Specialist Engineers, “With technology constantly improving, our jobs are always changing and evolving with it. I never find myself getting stagnant. From big complex jobs that require large teams of people across the world working together to get it done, to smaller jobs that only you as an engineer can do. Not having a fixed place of work allows me to work all around the UK but with the flexibility so I am home every day with my fiancé".

  • You’ll work as a duo and at times independently, don’t worry there’s plenty of support on hand from the team particularly when solo working – we’ve always got your back!
  • If you’re looking for flexibility, we’ll do our best to accommodate you. That could be agreeing a certain start or finish time for your shifts or planning your route so your last call is close to home. You can even work part-time. You’ll typically work core hours between 07.30 – 17.00 Monday – Friday (37.5 hours) however we may call on you from time to time for weekend work so we’ll be looking for your flexibility.
  • It’s a job you can switch off from at the end of the day.
  • We’ll invest in your training and development opening up your career pathways for future opportunities.
  • What’s in it for you.

You get all the brilliant benefits of working for a big business like BT including :

  • A salary of £30,458 a year for our Customer Engineer and up to £33,331 for our Specialist Engineer once you achieve the 18th Edition C&G Electrical Standards qualification
  • Join our BT Pension scheme, minimum 5% Employee contribution, BT will contribute up to 10%
  • 22 days’ annual leave increasing with service (plus 8 bank holidays)
  • Equal family leave for all parents, no matter how your family is made up. 18 weeks at full pay, 8 weeks at half pay and 26 weeks at the statutory rate.
  • Enhanced women’s health support : including help with menopause symptoms, cancer screenings, period care and more
  • 24 / 7 private virtual GP appointments for UK colleagues and immediate family members.
  • Two weeks paid carer’s leave
  • World-class training and opportunities across our business – if you want to develop your career, we’ll help you do that.
  • Option to join BT Share Saving schemes.
  • Discounts on broadband, mobile and TV packages for you and your family
  • Ready to apply?

Right now, we’re keen to hear from people who can support customers in and around London .

If you’re not in this area but you like the sound of the role, do submit your application and we’ll be in touch when we have something that’s closer to you.
