Job description

We are looking to welcome a new colleague to join an enthusiastic, motivated and supportive Emergency Department team. You will work in the Emergency Department at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy, which opened in 2012. The department has an annual attendance of 68000 of which 25% are paediatric cases.

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

  • To support the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate education within the emergency department
  • To ensure that critical delivery components occur through coordination and facilitation
  • Flexible delivery of education
  • To engage in personal development in relation to medical education
  • Develop a wide-ranging understanding of educational theory and teaching methodology which could compliment the PGCE or PGDE
  • To continue clinical development and contribute to deliver patient care

The post is aimed at clinicians 4 years post foundation who wish to broaden their clinical experience, deliver high quality teaching to medical students and receive excellent training in Emergency Medicine. 60% of the time will be spent providing direct clinical care with a balance of social and anti- social shifts. The other 40% will be to support the delivery of the ED’s educational and medical student programme. We deliver workplace based and simulation training for medical students from St Andrew’s, ScotGEM, Dundee medical programmes and have an extensive junior doctor training schedule.

You will work alongside other Specialty trainees and higher specialty trainees in Emergency Medicine from the South East and East of Scotland training rotations. Successful applicants will work at a middle grade level on a rota which provides 24 hour middle grade cover for the department under consultant supervision. The rota will include overnight, weekend work and is self rostered with consultant supervision. These doctors will be involved in the initial assessment and management of patients attending the ED, and in supervising and supporting FY2s and GPSTs in patient management. This will involve work in all areas of the department. There will be opportunities to develop experience of observational medicine under consultant supervision and enhance ultrasound skills under direct consultant supervision.

Senior fellows are involved in the initial assessment and management of patients attending the emergency department, and in supervising and supporting FY2s; GPSTs and ENP’s in patient management. This will involve work in all areas of the department. There will be opportunities to develop experience of observational medicine under consultant supervision and to take part in Observation ward rounds.

The department includes an 8 bay resuscitation area, a 9 bay majors area, a 6 bay minors area and 2 paediatric consulting rooms. There is a dedicated Procedures room and a 6 bedded Emergency Medicine Observation Unit which admits primarily toxicology and head injury patients. There is access to electronic pathology and radiology ordering. Departmental guidelines, protocols and rotas are on the departmental intranet web pages. We perform well in key areas such as sepsis, stroke thrombolysis and compliance with the 4 hour target.

The Emergency Department has 24 hour senior doctor presence, (21 Consultant Emergency physicians 18.5 WTE) with current shop floor consultant presence daily from 0800 to 2300. We have 5 GPwSI who deliver regular sessions in evenings and at weekends. There is 24hr ENP cover to help with the minors flow.

There is a 16 hour ENP-led Minor Injuries Unit Located at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline which is clinically supported by the senior doctors in the Emergency Department.
