Following a significant redesign, and a new model of carewhich will support all children and young people to thrive, Jersey CAMHS we arelooking to recruit two consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists to joinour multi-disciplinary team. The successful applicants will join the two existingconsultants. This is an exciting time to join CAMHS with the launch of theservice redesign and significant investment into the service. There is ample opportunity for private practice.

Main duties of the job
The service has expanded and continues to develop its service delivery to meet the needs of the community.As a senior clinician you will have opportunity to shape the service and influence child mental health more widely on the island.
Full travelling expenses are paid from a UK port of entry, with a generous relocation package available and the appointee may take advantage of Jersey taxation policies. The post attracts residential qualifications and Jersey has excellent affordable private education for children. Under Jersey Law, applicants must possess FULL registration with the General Medical Council and hold a licence to practise.

In-PatientProvision
There is no designated inpatient provision butthe team provide flexible intensive packages of care for children and youngpeople with severe or complex mental health difficulties. The packages ofcare can be provided both for assessment and treatment. The programmes are set up jointly with otherservices including Paediatrics, Adult Mental Health and Childrens Services {Social Care}.
The Paediatric and Adult Mental Health teamsare supportive in providing in-patient facilities and both the paediatric ward {Robin Ward} and acute adult mental health ward {Orchard House} are used foryoung people who require admission. Robin Ward will admit young people upto their 17th birthday. The postholder will be clinicallyresponsible for young people admitted toRobin Ward and Orchard House under theircare and will be expected to undertake reviews of these patients.
All those under 16, and most under 18 admittedto Orchard House are cared for separately to the other in-patients if possibleor are under continuous observation for safeguarding reasons. There is anew provision currently being built which will provide facilities for youngpeople to be admitted to an area separate from the main ward. It is anticipatedthat this may become available from December 2023.
When necessary young people can be transferredto the UK for inpatient treatment.

Responsibilities andExpectations of the Post Holders
Thepost holder will be an experienced clinician, who can demonstrate a commitmentto multidisciplinary clinical work and provide clinical leadership, support andadvice to the team.
Thecommitments of the post require a level of flexibility. The 4 Consultant Psychiatrists will providecross cover with 2 Associate Specialists in CAMHS so that there will always be atleast one psychiatrist available over the working week.
Wewould be particularly interested in applicants who could demonstrate skills inworking with older adolescents, crisis management, eating disorders and thedevelopment of transition services. Thepostholders will be supported in developing a special interest one or more ofthese areas.
Thepost holder will be expected to
Work with children and young people with acutemental health presentations including self-harm, suicidal ideation, low moodand psychotic symptoms and providing support to other members of the team inmanaging this group during periods of crisis.
Diagnose and managecommon psychiatric disorders using both psychological and pharmacologicaltherapies.
Work with young people with mental healthproblems who have a history of alcohol and substance misuse.
Provide consultation and liaison to other medicalspecialities, Education, Social Services and other agencies.
Develop and deliver training programmes for avariety of disciplines aimed at improving the level of expertise and thestandard of care within the mental health services.
Participate and contribute to the psychiatryteaching programme.
Provide supervision formental health and other professionals, and receive clinical supervision
Liaise and work effectively with others whoprovide services to children and young people as appropriate.
Comply with Health and Community Services agreed policies and procedures.
Work with managers and professional colleagues toensure the efficient running of the services and to share with consultantcolleagues the medical contribution to the management of the service.
Participate in clinical governance activities andQuality Improvement including audit
Thereis no requirement for Section 12(2) status and / or Approved Clinician statusand / or DOL assessment. However the postholder will be required to attendtraining to become an Approved Practitioner under the Mental Health (Jersey)Law 2016.
Populationand CAMHS Caseload
The population of Jersey at the end of 2019 wasestimated to be 107,800 with approximately 22,910 under the age of 19.
The current number of cases open to CAMHS is 1867
The total number of new referrals received in2023 was 1351 {6030 new referrals in by June 2023}
The current postholders {locum} caseload isapproximately 90. Most of the cases on the caseload will have an allocated careco-ordinator but there may be some exceptions to this. Most new assessments areundertaken by other members of the MDT, but some will require initial medicalassessment. There are no fixed requirements for new assessments and follow upappointments. On average there maybe 1-2 new assessments per week and 15-20follow up appointments, depending on the complexity of the cases and othercommitments.
The postholder will be required to participatein the daytime {9am 5pm} medical on call rota for 1-2 days per week. Theinitial duty response, including hospital liaison assessments, is made by theduty worker who will contact the doctor on call if required. With an expansionof our duty service to 8am 8pm there may be a requirement to provide medicalcover for this in the future.
AnnualLeave & Study Leave
Consultants areentitled to 30 days of annual leave increasing to 32 days after 7 years service at Consultant level, plus bank holidays.
Studyleave for the purpose of professional development should be applied for throughthe Clinical Lead and is approved by the Director of Medical Education. Thereis a generous study leave budget and there is an entitlement of 30 days every 3years.
