Assistant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist

Location : Barnstaple, EX31 3UD

Salary : £37,338 to £44,962

Children and Family Health Devon (CFHD) invites applications for an Assistant Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist . This NHS-funded post offers a unique career development opportunity in child and adolescent psychotherapy.

The successful candidate will be supported to complete a recognised pre-clinical training. If successful in gaining a place on the clinical training, employment will continue as a Trainee Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist (CAPT) within CFHD.

This role is suitable for individuals who are :

  • Already enrolled in a recognised pre-clinical course (such as Working with Children, Young People and Families : A Psychoanalytic Observational Approach (M7) or equivalent recognized by the Association of Child Psychotherapists), or
  • In the process of securing a place to start in September 2025.

You should have experience working with children and young people in a professional capacity and possess a sound understanding of psychoanalytic thinking. A commitment to developing a career as a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist and to the training pathway of the ACP is essential.

Depending on your stage in the pre-clinical journey, there may be an opportunity to join the clinical team part-time while completing course components.

Main Duties

CFHD provides integrated physical and mental health services for children and young people across Devon. We value psychoanalytic thinking within our wider CAMHS therapeutic offerings and are committed to developing our workforce and training pathways for future Child and Adolescent Psychotherapists.

The role offers funded support including :

  • Course fees for recognised pre-clinical training (e.g., M7 or equivalent)
  • Personal psychoanalysis fees and travel expenses (from year 2)
  • Employment at Band 6, 1 day per week to complete training requirements
  • Option to move into a full-time Band 6 Assistant CAPT role after the first year of pre-clinical training
  • Progression to a Band 6 Trainee CAPT (WTE) post within Devon CAMHS, subject to gaining a place on the 4-year clinical training
  • The applicant must have secured or be in the process of securing a place on a recognised pre-clinical course for September 2025.

    Person Specification

    Qualifications

  • Honours degree qualifying for Masters-level training in Child & Adolescent Psychotherapy
  • Postgraduate qualification in Working with Children, Young People and Families, or equivalent
  • Evidence of relevant CPD
  • Core degree in Nursing, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, or similar
  • Professional registration with a recognised body (e.g., NMC, HCPC, Social Work England, UKCP, BABCP)
  • Experience

  • Experience working with children and young people (0-18)
  • Experience collaborating with multi-agency professionals in health, social care, and education
  • Experience demonstrating anti-discriminatory practice and safeguarding children
  • Experience engaging with children, families, and carers with complex mental health needs, including assessments and therapeutic interventions in the community
  • Knowledge

  • Knowledge of mental health presentations and evidence-based interventions
  • Understanding of relevant legislation and assessment tools
  • Knowledge of child development and safeguarding procedures
  • Disclosure and Barring Service
