A unique opportunity exists for an Instrument / Electrical Engineer in our fast-paced R&D environment. Your multi-skilled role in Johnson Matthey will include designing, commissioning, and optimising pilot plants and bespoke process development equipment as well as site utility & infrastructure assets, spanning multiple Business Units across Teesside.

Significant investment is now ongoing within the R&D business to expand our capability and transform our operations, focussing on construction of new assets & upgrades to existing assets. This role allows a large degree of autonomy, and provides good opportunities for technical development and growth, fully supported by the wider engineering team.

Your responsibilities :

  • Creating and preparing innovative designs and specifications for bespoke Research Engineering equipment to facilitate delivery of business-critical research and manufacturing programmes.
  • Ensuring equipment designs meet site and statutory specification.
  • Identifying design solutions to complex problems and to continuously improve the effectiveness and reliability of bespoke Research Engineering equipment.
  • Preparing test methods and schedules for compliance testing of new and existing research engineering and site utility equipment, including safety critical system inspections to meet the requirements of company safety policy and legislative guidelines.
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting sub-optimal equipment performance, and working alongside customers to design efficient and robust solutions.
  • Carrying out and approving design calculations for safety critical equipment ensuring full compliance with all relevant codes, EHS standards and Life Saving Policies. Responsible for design approval.
  • Collaborating with and providing technical expertise to projects teams, technicians and customers during installation, commissioning, modification and troubleshooting of research engineering and site utility equipment.
  • Specifying and procuring equipment to support projects, preventative maintenance programmes and repairs, including preparation and control of single or multiple project budgets in the region of £100K.

Requirements for the role :

  • HNC / HND / Degree, or equivalent experience, in Engineering or Design
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and electrical design
  • Understands process safety management and the framework to achieving process safety (such as management of change)
  • Knowledge, skill and attitude to safely resolve E&I plant problems autonomously, managing own workload
  • Excellent communicator, both written and oral
  • Delivery focused to business-critical timescales and able to work under pressure
