A unique opportunity exists for a Mechanical Engineer in our fast-paced R&D environment. Your role in Johnson Matthey will be to manage Capital Projects in the delivery of site infrastructure & utility equipment and bespoke research engineering assets spanning multiple Sectors and Business Units across Teesside, including budget preparation, design, build, commissioning and optimisation.

Significant investment is now ongoing within the R&D business to expand our capability and transform our operations, focussing on construction of new assets & upgrades to existing assets. This role allows a large degree of autonomy, and provides good opportunities for technical development and growth.

Your responsibilities :

  • Managing multiple capital projects to design & deliver bespoke research engineering equipment and infrastructure assets, including the preparation & management of capital budgets up to £1M.
  • Leading a cross-functional team of engineers, designers & technicians to deliver cost-effective projects, including scope preparation, design, cost estimation, project planning, resource scheduling, capital forecasting, change management, installation and commissioning.
  • Providing advice and guidance to all stakeholders, including innovative solutions to unique design requirements, ensuring technical feasibility and delivering a cost-effective design that meets the business needs.
  • Identifying & managing uncertainties within projects to maximise opportunities and control business risk.
  • Managing the relationship between the customer, other stakeholders and third-party vendors to ensure effective project execution, including communication of progress & risks to all levels of the business.
  • Managing changes in scope and priorities across multiple projects, businesses & sectors. Manage & resolve conflicting priorities across stakeholders in different sectors and different sites.
  • Managing compliance in projects to regulatory & JM requirements, including EHS and reporting standards.
  • Actively contributing to EHS and process safety, including hazard studies and risk assessments. Lead Project Safety Audits in order to ensure team compliance with JM & legislative standards, and to continuously improve working practices.

Requirements for the role :

  • Experience in managing capital projects at the pilot plant scale
  • Experience of participating in Process Hazard Assessments, including HAZOP, PHR and LOPA
  • Engineering degree or background
  • Experience of commissioning equipment
  • Stringent attitude to working safely, and maintaining high standards in the working environment
  • The ability to build strong working relations and communicate with stakeholders at all levels
