Job Title : Head of English Department

Location : Braintree

Salary : £130 – £250 per day (Depending on experience)

Start Date : Immediate

Contract Type : Day-to-day / Long-term, Part-time / Full-time

Are you an experienced English teacher ready to take the next step into leadership, or an established Head of English Department seeking a new challenge?

GSL Education are seeking a committed and visionary Head of English Department to lead a thriving English faculty in a reputable school in Braintree . This role begins immediately and offers the chance to shape curriculum delivery and student achievement across Key Stages.

Role Overview :

As Head of English Department , you will take strategic responsibility for the planning, delivery, and development of English teaching. You’ll lead a team of passionate English teachers, promoting excellence in both teaching and outcomes.

Job Responsibilities :

  • Provide strong leadership and clear direction to the English department.
  • Oversee curriculum planning, assessment, and tracking of student progress.
  • Promote high standards of teaching, learning, and student achievement.
  • Mentor and support staff in professional development and performance.
  • Analyse department data to inform decisions and raise attainment.
  • Maintain a culture of academic rigour and creativity in English education.
  • Collaborate with SLT and contribute to whole-school initiatives.

Requirements for Head of English Department :

  • UK Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with a specialism in English .
  • Proven experience teaching English across all key stages .
  • Previous middle leadership experience or readiness to step into a leadership role.
  • Strong organisational, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Commitment to high standards, inclusion, and safeguarding.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
